Toploader Prices

For those of you who have bought toploaders outright from places like David Kee and such, what did you pay for it? And did you get it with the shifter assy? I don't need exact pricing, just a ballpark. You can PM me if you don't feel comfortable putting it in a reply.

Cobrabill 07-14-2005 08:33 AM

Don't remember what i paid David for it.But i wouldn't go anywhere else for a Toploader.

Michael4yah 07-14-2005 04:00 PM

Cobrabill would you expand on that answer?

HotRodJoe 07-14-2005 04:50 PM

Sal, you can expect $1750 for the tranny and $400 for shifter kit.

David's service & products are second to none.
He has also marketed a 2.87 first gear for toploaders which coupled with a 3.27(or vicinity) gears is about perfect.

CRS is abating....i paid around 800.00 to have my trans completely up-graded with new synchros,road-race bearings and a change from CR to WR.

Osama Bin Ladens family bankrolled George Bush Jrs 1st oil company Arbusto 30 years ago. The Bin laden Family have been close to the Bush family ever since. YOu can go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbusto_Energy or just do a google search under Arbusto. Nuff Said

The Toploader pricing issue is a classic apples to oranges situation.
David Kee is the only person out there who can build a brand new box--stem to stern--and that includes the case and tailshaft if you want it. Nobody can do that.

I was asked to look at a "rebuilt" Toploader that came from the southern part of the U.S. a year ago. $1,500 for the transmission and the only thing that I could see that was rebuilt was that the builder had elected to put in a rear seal and bushing. The rest of the unit was old and had been together for a long, long time.

The drain plug was full of filings and the fluid looked as though it had never been changed. That is the "rebuilt" version that is all too common. Even the better rebuilds don't have new shifter rails/detents/shifting cams. The stuff isn't available. David Kee has gone to a great lengths to have those components manufactured and the tooling cost is not cheap, either.

When the price of a TL "rebuilt" seems too good to be true--it probably is.

Don't believe everything you read, Dan Williams has been in the TL business fo 30+ years, he's the go to guy.

Thanks for the info guys. I just wanted to see some pricing as none of the big name toploader builders really list a price on their sites for a complete outright unit.

As for "who" to use, if I wind up buying a unit outright from a vendor, it will be from Mark at Toploader Heaven. I know David Kee is tops as well, but David has NEVER once answered any e-mail I've ever sent him, nor does he respond in his vendor section. I'm sure he's busy as heck, but communication is important when you have people wanting to spend 2k or so with you.

Ford of France 07-15-2005 08:06 AM

Dan Williams was once the "go to" guy for Toploaders but he isn't any longer. You can't buy the hard to find stuff from him, either.

Michael4yah 07-15-2005 11:13 PM

Sorry group. I was responding to the bottom of Cobra bills post about tree huggers and Bin Laden, Sorry. I learned about this some months ago and its been bothering me ever since, I will try in the future to keep, those coments in the appropriate forum. Thanks Comp.

On the 2.87 1st gear toploader with the 3.27 rear end, what is your hiway speed rpm in 4th? I guess everyone has their own idea of what hiway speed would be so lets say 70mph. Also is the gear spacing pretty good with this 2.87 or is there a drop off in 2nd or 3rd. Im trying to figuire out how to order this Richmond 6 spd. I can get it with a 2.77 1st and only OD 6th @ .84 with HD roadrace gears. If it works it should be a heck of a combination. If I cant I'll give David a call buy his. I would also agree that he is a nice and very knowlegable guy.

Sal, I can not find any email from you, I am not the only one that uses our computers though. If you can not contact me through email you may want to try to contact me toll free at 877-276-8081. I'll pay for the call and talk to you as long as you want even if you don't buy anything.

MT TOP LOADER CAME WITH THE CAR AND I'M NOT CERTAIN WHERE THE PREVIOUS OWNER GOT IT. (I HOPE FROM DAVID).

I'VE CALLED DAVID SEVERAL TIMES OVER THE YEARS WITH MY DUMB ASS QUESTIONS AND HE HAS ALWAYS GIVEN ME VERY GOOD INFORMATIVE AND BEEN A REAL GENTLEMAN.

THERE ARE PROBABLY A DOZEN OR MORE OF DAVIDS TRANSMISSIONS IN C.A.C.C. AND I KNOW OF NO ONE WHO IS NOT COMPLETELY HAPPY.

YOU CAN BET THAT IF I EVER NEED T/L WORK OR A NEW ONE I'M GOING TO CALL DAVID.

Y'ALL HAVE A REALLY GREAT DAY.

It's summer, I guess David is busy or playing, either way, good for him! I've called in the past and got prompt and good advice.

ERA is also very good, but it's summer, Bob P. is out on vacation or something. I can't wait for him to get back to work! :D

I'm working on my car here, so NO ONE is allowed to leave for any reason until I'm done.
