Amsoil 75W90 in Tremec?
Has anyone used the synthetic multiweight on their 3550s? Any ill effects of using this instead of the DexronIII ? It just seems like the ATF is almost too thin in viscosity. I drained the old oil in mine and put 2.5 qts of Amsoil and it's shifting so much better. I just hope I don't do any damage. Easy enough to drain and refill...

I've been running that same Amsoil in my Doug Nash Richmond 5 spd with absolutely no problems. I called Richmond and they recommended Redline but said Amsoil would be just as good. Think that may be because they have some deal with Redline.
I've been using Amsoil in all my vehicles and in everything that holds oil for over 20 years. Started using it when I lived in Anchorage because my Chevy Blazer 350 just barely turned over in the mornings during the winter. Had to be doing damage during warmups. Never looked back. Been using synthetics since then. Paul |
Redline makes some good stuff. I use it in all of my cars. Its a bit spendy though. The only reason I started using it is because they are 5 minutes away from me in Benicia. I have never tried Amsoil. I might have to pick some up for my new car and give it a whirl.

Thanks for the replies. I actually looked for Redline at 2 speed shops but they only stocked Amsoil. My friend and mechanic said he wouldn't hesitate to use it after seeing and smelling what came out of the Tremec. It was almost like water; I guess it had ATF from the factory.Some guys are anal about using only what the factory recommends for 1 reason or another. :3DSMILE:

75W90 will be too heavy for a tranny designed to run with DexronIII or Mercon ATF. The newer tranny's like T5's, Tremecs, et.al, were designed with different synchro plates that I believe are paper backed and require the ATF to work smoothly and extend their life.
Try a search on Tremec transmissions and you'll find what is recommended and why. There is lots of information on this subject on the web. |
I wouldn't use that heavy of an oil. You won't be able to shift the thing in the morning unless the outside temperature is 90 degrees.
I used normal synthetic motor oil in mine. 10w-50 seemed t work great. You can shift it with one finger, and after 50k miles, the trans showed no signs of wear. |

Interesting info guys.
My tremec shifts great cold or on the move, but after it heats up driving around awhile, its hard to shift into gear and really doesnt like going into reverse (even going into 2nd 1st) from a stop. Sound familiar to any of you. Did the synthetic stuff help? Thanks |
It does sound like a big jump from ATF. It's shifting great, though. And it was 45 degrees when I went for a test drive.
My tranny never liked to go in reverse. The only way was to go to 1st, then reverse. Even then I'd sometimes get a grrrr and had to double-clutch. Now, it seems to be so much better. I've always have been told to:
A) Use GM SyncroMesh fluid in a Tremec trans and that is what I did. B) Use Redline synthetic as recommended by the manufacturer in my Richmond Gear. |
I tried the royal purple ATF and got new leaks..went back to synchromesh as recommended by tremec. no leaks...

Hey guys, keep in mind that a 30 WT motor oil has about the same viscosity as a 90 WT gear oil (give or take, I don't have a chart in front of me). Motor oil does not use the same scale a gear oil, it uses a lower one.
I've been using Redline MTL in my Tremec for 5 years with no problems. Tremec recommends Syncromesh by GM. Bob |

As a follow up, I changed the Amsoil to GM Synchromesh Fluid as recommended (by Tremec) and I have to say, she shifted much better and smoother on the Amsoil 75W90 synthetic.
Wonder if Three Peaks has more info on the "paper-backed synchro plates" that require ATF to function properly... |
I have T5 out of 95 Cobra that I need to fill. Does the same hold true for that tranny as far as requirements??

Btw, you can purchase the Pennzoil brand syncromesh for 1/2 the price at Autozone. Pennzoil supplies the oil for GM and they sell it under their own name.
