New TKO 600.. Input shaft won't turn..
The shifter feels like it's in neutral but the input shaft will not turn.. I'm able to shift it into different gears.. I did a search on here and found one potential fix: use rag on shaft and turn with large vise grips.. I'd rather not try that .. Is there another way?? Thanks.

Why do you want to turn it? just curious. If the trans is on your work bench, it won't be able to do several of the things it's supposed to do.

Tremec installation tip sheet says: "Before installing
the transmission make sure that it turns freely". Just following directions :D

Mine is very hard to turn also.
There is a rubber sleeve on the output shaft to protect the splines. That also makes it hard to turn, even though it's in neutral. It's still trying to turn the output shaft just because if friction. Larry |
Even if it were in gear, it should be easy to turn. Do you have a clutch disc? Slide the disc on the splines and that will give you some leverage to see if it's locked up or not.

Like Larry Said, pull the bushing on the rear of the tranny housing.. Becarefull not to nick up that seal around it though. This is what was preventing mine from turning.
If that's not the issue you can try pulling the very front over to make sure all three of those pins are lined up properly. If that's not it, trying what Brent said with the clutch disk. If that's not it Call Tremec and they'll make it right. Hopefully i's one the first 3 options above.. :-) Cheers, |
Mine was like that when I received it. It can get in a bind if the shipper set it on end. I put a rag around the input shaft and worked it back and forth with my hand and then some channel lock pliers (being careful not to mar the splines) and it finally broke loose when working it with my hand. I had put in a call to the seller of my transmission and had it freed up before they called back.

There is a note somewhere in the Tremec info that says something can get jammed up inside during shipping and you can remove the access covers to fix it. I know, not very specific help but the input shaft should turn freely using your hand. If not, something is wrong and needs to be dealt with. That plug on the output shaft could do it so remove it and try it out.
BTW - Mike Forte - forteparts.com - is a great source of help, parts, etc. Also, don't do what I did and fail to get the input shaft length correct for the bellhousing you're using. I crammed the input shaft up into the crank and trashed my thrust bearing as the input shaft ended up 1/2" closer to the front of the car with my new Lakewood. |
Thanks for your input guys.. That's one thing I have to figure out: The input shaft length.. I'll be running a 331 stroker mated to a 15202 Lakewood bell housing. Any ideas on what length input shaft? Does the length vary significantly? I plan to mate the tranny with the engine while it's outside the car.. I read in the ERA FIA manual that the engine is put in without the tranny attached so I want to get it right before I'm under the car struggling..
