T5Z problem
Last year I posted that I was having a problem with my rebuilt T-5 and after much thought and good comments from CC members I decided to make a major change.
I went with a new Ford Motorsports 10.5" Clutch, new hyd slave cylinder set-up instead of cable, new pedal assembly, went to manual brakes instead of power and put in a new Tremec T-5Z from Summit Racing. It was a lot of work on my back in the garage, but I was very satisfied with my changes. I put on about 1000 trouble free miles until this past weekend at London LCS. I traveled down to London on Saturday morning looking to enjoy the day with everyone and the cars. That trip was the most at a continuous speed, before that just cruising around, never getting into 5th gear around town. As I pulled into London I noticed that there was a noise and severe vibration in the tranny when I put the clutch in while in gear. 1st, 2nd 3rd, didn't matter. If the car was stopped I could change gears with no noise, but if I was moving, noise and vibration. I hung around until 2:00 and started up to go home, no noise or vibration. So I took off for Cleveland. Going down and back I was moving between 70 and 75 right around 2000 RPM in 5th gear. Everything fine untill I went to get off at the exit. There was the noise and vibration as I put the clutch in while slowing down to downshift. Put the car up on the jack stands and ran the car like Ferris Buehler between 1st and 2nd up to 2000 RPM and changed gears with no appreciable noise or vibration. While I had the car up I decided to change the fluid. Put in 2.5 qts of new Red Line D4 ATF Synthetic. Took the car out for a breif ride tonight and there it was, noise and vibration. Help, sorry for the story length, any help would be appreciated. Jim |
Are you sure it is the transmission? Sounds like it could be anything from the throwout bearing, to a bad U-joint in the driveline?
Check to see if it happens at certain RPMs, also try revving the motor in Neutral up to speed to see if the throwout bearing is causing the vibration. Do this with the clutch in and out. Might be something as simple as a bad clutch disk or a bad throwout bearing, pilot bearing, etc... |

I tried it in neutral up to 2000 to 2500 RPM with the clutch in and out no noise or vibration. I put it in first and with clutch in rev'd to 2000 to 2500 RPM and there was noise and vibration. I did it in 2nd and 3rd and same thing. It's difficult to determine where it is coming from while still in the car. There is vibration in the shifter. I hope to get it up in the air tomorrow on a lift and have someone under it while I do the same thing above. Hopefully, he or I will be able to get a better idea where the problem might be. Any other help or comments would be appreciated. Thanks, Jim |
Sounds like a worn pilot bearing where the input shaft chatters around inside the bushing when the clutch is depressed.

Thanks for the input, tomorrow I will have it in the air and will check things out. If it is the pilot bearing, do you recommend the solid bushing or the needle bearing unit. I went to Summit tonight and got both. Since I never did this before, how do you get the old solid bushing out? Thanks for any help. Jim |
I think that the new roller bearing is cooler and more high tech, but others say to stick with the bronze bushing because as it fails, it will just wear and not fail catestrophicaly. When you put everything together last time, did you put a littl grease on the bushing? This cold be it.
There are pilot bearing pullers on the market to get them out. I have also heard that if you fill the bearing hole with grease and get a wooden dowel the same size as it ID of the hole, you can hit the dowel with a hammer, and the hydrolic pressure will push the bearing right out. |
