No 1- You Don't Put A Chevy Engine In A Cobra
No 2 -you Need A 4sp Toploader For Your Cobra Then You Won't Have Any Problem. |

I've had a Muncie M21 in my 1963 Corvette for as long as I've had it (28 years) and I love it. Here's a good site for more info: http://www.gearzone.net/

John,
I used a Muncie trans in my car when I first built it. It was OK with the tall rear end 3.31 to 1 until I put a wild solid lifter cam in it. Then, it was difficult to start from a stop smoothly. It was still a really good close ratio track gearbox. With the straight through 4th gear, it caused the engine to constantly rev high on the freeway. I bought a Tremec 5 speed to replace it and adapted it to my old 350 engine. It was SO much better! A much lower first gear for easy launches and 5th gear for cruising 80 mph @ 2,500 rpm. Paul |
shifter
John,
What shifter are you planning to use. Look into Hurst Super Speedway shifters--49100010 and 4910004. They can come with linkage and mounting plates also. Look at the Hurst web sight and search for circle track shifters. The benifit of this shifter is it has a reverse lock out feature so you can never down shift by accident to reverse. Also, you can buy a kit or make your own shfting rods with heim joints for a very nice shifting setup. Bill K |

Thanks guys John. Also can you tell me with the hurst shifter is it a straght shift movment or does the shifter move like a standard shifter??????????????? |
Hurst shifter
The Hurst shifter is the classic H pattern with reverse up and to the left of first. I am willing to bet you have a standard Hurst 4-speed shifter that does not have the lockout for reverse as these are about double the price of the standard Hurst shifter. The numbers for the Hurst Super Speedway shifter, I gave you will work on the M-20 box with the correct linkage kit. All you need is the shifter part and the linkage rods which you can make if you want to save some money from aluminum rod and heim joints. Since you have a shifter all ready on the trans you can use those adapters. I am not sure about the leaving the speedo gear out but you will have to have some sort of a threaded cover or tight plastic cover to seal it up from dirt and water getting in.
