Need answers fairly quickly
 
I have a Contemporary with 351 Cleveland. It has an automatic trans, which I'm replacing. There is a setup available as follows:

Tremec TKO 600, part #TCET5008

McLeod bellhousing to fit Tremec, holds 164 or 157 tooth flywheel. This was on a 351W with dart block.

Spec stage III clutch and pressure plate, 10 1/2 ", fits the above setup

157 tooth billet steel flywheel. Has removable weights of 28 and 50 oz. , can be run as zero weight as well.

Question: will all the above fit my 351 Cleveland in my Contemporary? Any informed answers are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The Cleveland has a Windsor bolt pattern, so the bell should fit. You should make SURE it's really a Cleveland, and not a Modified. Visually they look the same, but the Modified uses the 429/460 bolt pattern. I am not sure on the flywheel though, I really don't do much with Clevelands.

Yeah, for some reason the Cleveland seems to have become a dinosaur. Back in the late 70's when I was much younger and into these things, the W was an old lady's motor, and the Cleveland was the hot ticket. What happened? I never heard of a Modofied. How do I tell if it's a Cleveland or a Modified? It definitely has Cleveland valve covers, that much I know. Thanks, Sal.

The 351M/400 is another member of the 335 engine family distinguised by, among other things, a taller deck height, 2V only heads, and the aformentioned 429/460 or 385 series bolt pattern for the bellhousing. If your setup currently uses a smallblock trany then you shouldn't have any issues. Since you already have the block and bellhousing just match them up, if they work then all is well because the 385 series bolt pattern isn't even close. The only possible sticking point that I can see is if your engine was ballanced with the auto flex plate then I'd want to make sure that the new flywheel is balanced the same way, probably the 28oz. Good luck and wind the snot outa that puppy!

Sal,

Something you may want to think about in the parts line up is the Spec Stage III clutch. During the TKO thrash a couple of weeks ago some folks said some Tremec dealers believed the Spec Stage III stuff might not be the best choice for the transmission because of how aggressive they believed the engagement was at launch and under power.

A smoother engagement and a softer pedal would be a dual disc street deal like the McLeod Street Twin or their new at the SEMA show and about to be released this month street twin that uses your OEM flywheel. For what it is worth Ford did use a dual disc setup in the new Ford GT.

Another consideration is the dual disc has, not suprisingly, about twice the power transmission capacity of even a very aggressive single disc but with a silky engagement and a easy to push in clutch pedal.

I had to have a different shaft put in my TKO600. If the Cleveland is of the Windsor bolt pattern, I believe you will need the 164 tooth flywheel so the starter will engage properly.

The clutch needs to fit the nose of the trans and be of the correct diameter. I run a 11" dual disc., 26 spline clutch and plate.

May I suggest you try to get an idea of your fork clearance before you start dropping iron into the car. If you need to trim the fork, remember it is case hardened.
