Tremec 3550 shifting problem
Anyone else out there with a 3550 that doesn't like to be downshifted from 5th to 4th? Mine sometimes will go in smoothly, and at other times it just refuses to do so despite multiple attempts. I often have to slow down a bit and go into 3rd before I can go back into 4th. Any ideas (other than driver error!) about what is wrong and can be done about this?

Sounds like your sycro is worn for 4th gear, how many miles are on the transmission, or is it a new installation? jimig@standardtransmission.com

Can we assume the fluid is as recommended and the level is proper?

Guys,
Thanks for the replies. The transmission only has about 3K on it and was checked for proper fluid level not too long ago. The only thing I can think of that may not be right was that when it was first installed, the trim ring/boot around the shifter was installed while the car was in gear. So, when it was in 2nd or 4th gear, it would slip out of gear from the pressure of the boot pushing on it. I reinstalled it (moved it backwards) when the lever was in neutral and the "popping out of gear" problem went away. I am not sure if this would have an effect on syncros or caused some other problem to eventually develop into this one. Other than that, it works great in all the gears with only a problem with "grinding" when downshifting from 5th to 4th. I should also say that it doesn't happen all the time, just most of the time! I lost my 4th gear synchro twice in my 3550, started grinding 3rd to 4th and 5th to forth. I always had shifting issues with this particular trans...bad mfg run? I don't know?
After spending about $800 in time and material to rebuild it after running it for 2yrs then have it fail again ....hmmm |
Well, today I took my car out for a run and repeatly shifted from 4th to 5th and back again many times with no problems at all! So, I am confused. It must be my driving or a shifting gremlin! I have driven probably over a million miles in cars with 5 speeds and never had this happen before. So, I will try it again tomorrow and see what gives. I'm thinking about have a couple of tequilas tonight, so let's see what that does to my shifting!

HiSkipB,
I have a SPF 351w with a Tremec 3550 with similar shifting problems especially on 2nd and 4th gear (slipping). How did you definitely solve yours ? Thanks LF |

I had similar problems with my 3550. I replaced the fluid with straight 40w synthetic motor oil. That was several years ago. It has been fine since.
