Which top loader?
What specs on a top loader do I need to look for to put behind a side oiler?
Close ratio, shaft size, etc. Thanks for any input. John |
In General
Track use only: Close ratio Street: Wide ratio BUT, both gear sets have a 1:1 4th gear so... What diff ratio are you running? The more gear ratio you have the less you need a wide ratio (first gear will become a granny). Tire diameter has just the reverse effect. |
I haven't purchased the rear end yet but will likely be a Salisbury with a 330. How about shaft lengths and diameters? I'm looking at the item below. Will this work?
Toploader (close ratio) 64-427 Box 1 3/8 Input Spline All teeth appear to be in excellent shape Overall excellent condition. What's it worth, roughly? Thanks again for the help. John |
With a 3.31 ratio you will be MUCH happier with a wide ratio on the street. Give David Kee a call and talk with him about about this transmission.

The wide ratio toploader is not that wide, ratios are similar to the TKO600 minus 5th of course!

But experience showed me that the 2.88 is sufficient for drag in the french Street category with the big power I have. This allows me to go to the competitions comfortably by the road. |
I have the close ratio and it's a 'street' car with a 3:31 rear. Because Hawaii is pretty flat, I get by OK. But heaven help you if you get stuck in a slow moving line waiting to drive into a steep parking garage entrance ramp! :D
Now once I'm rolling, man I really like the close ratio. I can drop into SECOND GEAR at 60 mph, which makes for some impressive accelleration and lots of noise while your passenger cringes in terror. If you have any hills to deal with, I'd have to recommend a wide ratio. Another thing I DO like about the close ratio is the higher 1st gear. It helps to 'control' the flow of horse power and is not near as likely to 'break em loose' unexpectedly. In that respect, I consider it a bit of a safety feature. On the drag strip I am STILL traction limited, man a lower gear ratio would surely be a serious tire frier. |
3:42 rearend, little over 500 bhp, wide ratio seems about right.
