New Tranny Shifting Problems
I have a new ERA cobra that I just drove for the first time today- Shelby Alum 427 with Tremec TKO tranny. I could barely get it into gear- it was so stiff- and could only really shift into first and second - and couldnt get it into reverse at all. Really had to work it and muscle it to get it into any gear at all- eventually got it but it is a struggle. No grinding - just real hard to find the gears.
Is there some sort of break in that I should be doing or does it sound like I have something wrong with my set up.? Thanks, David |
After you get it going, can you push in the clutch and have it sit still and idle? Sounds like the clutch isn't disengauging enough.

Clutch Movement
Tim,
Yes, I can push in the clutch with it in gear and it will sit still and idle. But because it is so hard to shift I will take note of your suggestion and put her on the lift and check the slave cylinder movement. I also will add a spring on the slave cyclinder- I notice the threaded rod on the slave cylinder which pushes the throw out fork has a tendency to move laterally - which may be decreasing the throw enough to make it hard to shift- and the spring will keep it aligned possibly. Thanks for replying :D |
Model Helicopters are very cool.

Elbow grease!
Careful with the elbow grease on a TKO.
My TKO600 got stuck between 4th & reverse because I "man-handled" it. You have to open the trans. up to fix that! Good luck jdog |
also make sure you have the right amount and type of fluid in the trans.
Tremec recommends GM Syncromesh fluid. |
I would check out the clutch system first, as that is what it sounds like, when you have the motor turned off does it shift in and out of gear smoothly? If it does that is one way to tell if it is a clutch problem. jimig@standardtransmission.com

Hard Shifting Transmission
I had a shifting problen in my 6 speed Corvette (would not go into 1st or 2nd gear most of the time with out really working at it) so I assumed I'd need new syncros. Consulted the C5 web site and "they" suggested I change the fluid to Dextron IV. Did that and added some GM syncro goop and I was amazed at the difference. Shifts like a new car now!!
