Best way to clean tranny case?
I bought a TR 3550 with 4000 miles on it and want to clean the case. Any suggestions on the best product(s) to use?
Thanks, John

John, I use and highly recommend a product called S100. It is available through most bike (motorcycle) shops and is unparallelled in it's abilities. I have used many products over the last 40 years and I have used this exclusively for about a decade. It is also known as Total Cycle Cleaner in some shops. It has abilities not even listed. I used it to clean an old BMW I was getting ready for a couple's anniversary and when I used it on the chrome it even eliminated the surface corrosion that was developing. I've used it to dissolve the gunk in carb bowls, it is bio-degradable and is safe on the skin. Oh...Did I say that I really like the stuff???:)

One of the best things for simple de-greasing is WD40.

I am hoping to brighten up the alloy. It's pretty clean now. Steel wool?

Don't use steel wool. The wool leaves micro pieces and fibers on the surface that soon rust.

Double Ugly,
So what did you end up using to clean your trans case?

I used to use WD 40 on my magnesium alloy transaxles years ago. This is aluminium alloy but I tried it and its cleaning up nicely. What didn't clean up I tried brake cleaner. It didn't work on the tougher areas so I'll try carb cleaner (carefully). I also may use woodz idea of S100 if I can find it locally. If it's as good as he says (I'm sure it is) it would be handy to have around.

John, The reason I suggested the S100 is because it cleans the pores in the aluminum and makes it look brand new. It only needs a litlle brushing with a soft bristle brush and washes off( and is neutralized) with water. I buy it by the gallon and am trying to locate a source for a 55 gallon drum of it.

Try one of the numerous alloy wheel cleaner sprays.

I'll search for some S100 ASAP. The tranny is close to new but going into an incredible replica and I want it to be as close to perfect as possible as possible.

Castrol super clean is fantastic cleaner, except it should not be used to clean aluminum parts.
Its not available in Calif.

That Castrol Super Clean is good stuff, but be careful on the skin, it peeled and chaffed mine. Took days to get back to normal and a lot of handcream...
