DIY Short Input Shaft
To shorten the inout shaft on a TKO 600, is it really as easy as it looks?
Shorten the stub that inserts into the pilot bearing about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch? And do the same with the sleeve on the bearing retainer for the TO bearing? |
I only had to replace the shaft with one that had been shortened. I reused the bearing retainer, (shaft sleeve), without modification. Turn the gearbox upside down, tilted to the front so the roller bearings come out with the shaft. If a roller bearing does drop into the case, it will be easier to retrieve with it up side down, and tilted. Use anaerobic sealer to reseal the bearing retainer and use thread sealer on the bearing retainer bolts.
Oh yea, the garage wasn't done yet, so the kitchen counter worked great until she came home. http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...garage_009.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...garage_010.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...garage_011.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...garage_012.jpg http://www.clubcobra.com/photopost/d...garage_014.jpg |
My Installation Kit from Dynamic has a McLeod spacer between the transmission and bellhousing.
Is there an advantage to changing to the short input shaft and eliminating the spacer? I'm about ready to start assembly, so now is the time to decide the best way to go. Rodger |
I must go to the shorter shaft because of the X-member in the Kirkham car's location. The 3/4in spacer is way too much for all to fit well.
BURGS, any chance of a picture of the two shafts side by side? You are helping me out- I am sure others as well - tremendously. Thanks again. |
The splined portion of the shaft will also have to be shortened, the total amount removed from both sections is 5/8". jimig@standardtransmission.com
