Tranny & Shifter Choice
New to this game, order my kit, coming 1st of Oct.
The engine I am putting in is 351W stroked out, 450 HP --- 3.55 rear end gears.
What tranny should I install and what shifter??
Please advise.

Get a TKO 500/600. The both have short throw shifters, just put your Cobra style shift extension and you're set

I went with a Tremec T-56 (six speed) and am very happy with it. I could drive all day in 4th, but it's very nice to have 5th and 6th for loafing down the highway.

The 2.87 first gear in the TKO 600 works better with 3.55 rears. Ditto for the .68 OD in highway use. Think about using a midshift instead of the rearmost position unless you just gotta have that dogleg thing for looks. Lots of positive commments of better feel and action from the midshift position.

Before you go with the T-56, make sure your kit will accomodate it. Not all kits will.

The Richmond 5 speed is good and strong, but very hard shifting (goes with the territory). I like the idea of a 1:1 5th gear, but for street duty, I would like the easier shifting TKO

Top Loader Rev. Lockout
I really like my toploader. To get into first, I usually put the trans. in 2nd and go straight up. My question is how come no one makes the original ref. shift lockout for the trans. I have the hurst shifter and the trans works great. Any ideas?

I have a TKO600 with a Jardine shifter and knob. I have the shifter set forward to allow my arm a comfortable shifting, and resting, position. Very happy with the setup. Comfortable, easy shifting, and more than capable of handling the horsepower (my engine puts our 450 hp.). Congrats. on the new car. You're going to love it!

What's the intended use? That makes all the differance. Drag racing puts a lot of strain on the trans; you'll ruin a T56 in no time. Road racing should use a TKO with a .82 fifth. Street cars can use just about anything.
First, decide on exactly what your use is. Then take a look at the chart and see what gear ratios will fit you best. Look for the strongest transmission in that catagory. You can't get too strong of a trans.
If nothing off the shelf meets your needs, call Gordon and have him build you one.
