Which Clutch Disk ???
My new TKO600 (with the .82 OD gear) has arrived. My ERA Cobra has a 425HP 351W FMS crate engine and a 3:31 jag rear. The car is relatively light at 2500 lbs so ERA recommends a "standard pressure clutch".
I ordered a RAM Powergrip, model 98794T, with the transmission. The clutch disk is organic on one side and sinter iron on the other side (pressure plate side). I have been told in a light weight car with a lower numical rear gear (3:31) that this disk will grap very quickly and will chatter immediately prior to engagement. I drive the car on the street and very infrequently at Sebring. I want a smooth engaging clutch with near normal clutch petal effort. An hydraulic system operates the clutch with an external slave cylinder. I want to keep this set-up. My question is what brand and part number clutch kit or pressure plate and disk should I install? I understand the newest tech is the twin disks that provide nearly twice the surface contact space so that you can achieve higher grip and stay with organic disks for smooth engagments. Sounds good but likely a bit too much for my needs. What single disk / pressure plate set-up should I use for my application? Should I consider the RAM 88794HDT which is advertised as a premium clutch replacement kit with organic on both sides of the disk? I heard I should use a disk with kevlar material like the Superior disk. I heard the Centerforce PP can be trouble due to the centrifical weights. ERA uses Weber which I believe is a McLeod product. What is the best set-up for me? |
Even before considering the material for the driven disc I'd be sure you consider a sprung hub. For your application I believe that organic material both sides is best. With the weight of your car you could easily use a stock clutch disc from a high performance Mustang. The sprung hub is often shunned because "racers use solid centers" but years of experience has shown that sprung hubs make for less shock loads on the transmission and help match revs when shifting. I have a centerforce dual friction clutch in my build. Over 25k miles with some open track time and it is like new. I had to yank the motor last year and I checked the clutch plate with a micrometer. Barely any wear on it.

Roscoe, got any Centerforce part numbers?

In the 2 low 12 sec mustangs I've owned, I had spec stage 2 and a king cobra. The spec was a bit firmer, but never had any problems with either. I will most likely use the spec again in my 408

Nope,
This is the part you need with the TKO 600 as it's a 26 spline input shaft. https://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/productitem_10001_10002_746203_-1_56908 |
Good call! That didn't even dawn on me!
Both of my options will not work as they are 10 spline. |
Although some folks are running Centerforce with success,McLeod & Ram are better units.I wouldn't put a Centerforce on a mini-bike.
