Can I test a used tranny before I buy?

Is it possible to do some basic testing of a used tranny while it is out of the vehicle? I'm considering buying a used T5z from a complete stranger. He said that it shifts perfectly with only 3500 miles, but I don't know this guy at all. I just want to make sure that it's not a total wreck and at least should function close to normal. Any and all advice is welcome... thanks.

Run it through the gears at the very least, DOES it shift good? Turn the input shaft by hand while in each gear, is it smooth? Myself, I would take the top cover off and do an internal inspection. The results of which might not mean much if you don't know specifically what to look for.

Mike I would suggest hooking up a drill to the pilot portion of the input and use it to spin it through the gears, this way you will hear any noises the tranny might be making in certain gears. Like it was stated earlier it would be best to pull the top cover and do a visual inspection of the internals. jimig@standardtransmission.com

like was said before, spin the tranny through the gears making sure it is smooth. Then, look inside to make sure no gears are chipped, and the small synchro teeth on all the gears are good and not worn/chipped. If so, then buy it for a price expecting to rebuild it, set of synchros, bearings, + labor.

Personally, I'd buy either a new tranny, or a rebuilt one from a shop that knows and rebuilds these tranny's, such as D & D that advertises in mustang 5.0 magazine.
