Successful TKO600 Swap !!!
I have been planning and delaying a swap of my older 3550 with a new TKO600 for a while. I knew the old transmission shift linkage was getting sloppy and I would benefit from a stronger transmission and the improved gear ratios in the TKO600 4617 (2.87 first, .82 OD), but I knew it would be a lot of work.
The new 4617 arrived on 9/4. I ordered the transmission from Jimi at Standard Transmission and Gear. Working one day a weekend, with my 15 year old son, we started the removing the seats, tunnel, old trans, pressure plate, pilot bearing (what fun!), etc on 9/9. Five weeks later, on 10/14, we completed the clutch and transmission swap. And everything worked on the first drive except for some preliminary clutch fork throw adjustments! What a relief!!! Especially since I have never done clutch or transmission work before. I was also able to shave the lower bellhousing for ground clearance and wire the neutral start switch and a few other “while you have the tunnel out” improvements. Jimi at Standard Transmission was a great help. He verified my transmission selection, including the input shaft length, and suggested other parts that I would need; oil, the proper output yoke, etc. Due to concerns about locked shift selectors, I had Standard “blueprint” the transmission. They checked the selector forks and clearances on key components. It was comforting to know that this was done. Bob and Doug at ERA were very helpful as I have come to know and appreciate. Doug talked me through several installation procedures which my mind, body and car appreciate. While I am no pit-stop transmission change expert, the project has been rewarding and possible due to help from Jimi, Bob, Doug and many threads on Clubcobra. Many thanks to all. |

Isn't it nice when you back it out of the driveway the first time AND IT WORKS!! I know your son will never forget this experience and he's probably been crowing to his pals at school about what a grease monkey he is now. :LOL:

Old Transmission

The older 3550 was in the car when I purchased the car about 5 years ago. It is still a good transmission. I have the shift linkage repair kit that I plan to install. I just do not what to do with an extra transmission. |
