T-5 life with a 450 - 500 # of torque
Got a 302 FMS crate motor connected to a T-5 WC...thinking of swapping to a 351 stroker. How long will the t-5 wc last in a street...a few 1/4 miles runs situation? %/
A: will break the first time you step on it
B: will fail slowly by wearing parts
C: yank second gear one time and....it's broken
D: other...explain

In a light weight cobra, I think these will last longer than you would think, as long as you are not running slicks. They took lots of abuse in Mustangs that weighed 1000 lbs more than many Cobras. If it breaks, send it to G-Force and they will make it so it will live behind a 361 stroker with up to 600hp.

It will last awhile in your Cobra, being a lightweight car. But the more hard passes you put on it the more risk you take, esspecially with slicks. The point that will break in the T5 will be 3rd gear, not second, that is when your torque is being put to the ground and your tires stop spinning. All that being said, you can not put an life span on your T5 because alot of it depends on the way you drive it, the easier you drive it the longer it will last. But like stated earlier when it does break you can either have it upgraded or go to a TKO600. jimig@standardtransmission.com |

It also depends on the specific T5. The older generic mustang T5s were very weak. The newer ones in the 5.0 GTs were called "World Class T5s" and were rated at 300 lb/ft of torque. The aftermarket ones only made by Ford Racing, are the "T5Z Superduty" and are rated at 330 lb/ft of torque and have all double moly clusters and gears.

The T5Z also comes with a really sweet short throw shifter, and a better 1st gear ratio.

I got my T-5z at summit new for $1100.00 it's been fine behind my 351/402. The only thing I dont like is the big jump between 4th and 5th.The3.5 rear end gives me 2000 rpm at 75(aprox).If it does blow up i'll just get another one.

If you have the tools and the know how, a set hardened gears from g-force is only like $250 add another $250 for the rebuild kit and for $500 you have a trnny that will outlast most stock TKO500's. T-5's last just fine until you start slamming the gears all the time. then you lose 2nd! haha
