Toploader Tailshaft Housing
Could someone please post a picture of the correct tail housing on a Toploader for a 427 Cobra showing the shifter mounting point locations?
There appears to be so many different configurations, I'm a little confused :JEKYLHYDE Thanks, Paul |
Paul,
The original tail housing used on a 427 Cobra is a 65, 66 Mustang. Check out: Tailhousing ID Chart |
I have used tailshaft housings with either a "mid" mount, or the rear mount, for the shifter.

I just went through this myself. It can be confusing. The original trannys were big input Toploaders with the short tailshaft. Putting one together today, you can use any of the various short tailshafts. You may find examples with either the mid or rear shifter mount, or both. The shifter assembly mounts to a plate which is bolted to the tailshaft. This plate must match the holes on the tailshaft, mid or rear mount. The 427 Cobra needs the shifter in the rear mount location. If you don't have a shifter yet, you may want to explore that a little to be sure everything will bolt up properly. |
Just give David Key or Dan Williamsa call... everything you could ever want to know about Toploaders and then some.

Thanks Guys,
The reason I ask is that I have bought a 427 and gearbox from Southern Automotive for my new Kirkham. The engine is terrific, but the gearbox seems to have the wrong shifter on it. The tailshaft housing appears to have the mountings and shifter in the mid location, which is, I think, 3-4" too far forward. Is there a mounting kit to put the shifter in the correct location without swapping the rear housing or complete gearbox? I'll also need longer linkage rods as well. Thank you. Paul |

Yes there is a "kit". It's a steel plate that mounts to the side of the tailshaft. It has two sets of holes in it - one set attaches the plate to the tailshaft, the other set attaches the shifter to the plate. See this plate in the attached photo. How long is your tailshaft? Are you sure you got the short version? Give Bill Heeley, Dan Williams or David Kee a call. They all should have what you need. |
Thanks Doug.
Bill at Southern Automotive is sending my the plate and longer rod kit. Paul |
