Which Torque Converter
Looking for your input on what torque converter I should use.
Engine- KC 482 Tranny- PA C-4 super comp no brake Rear end- ford 9" with 3.20 gears and trac-loc I currently have a Boss Hog Street Bandit Level 3, stall speed of 3800-4200. It seems to be too high of a stall speed. I feel if the stall was around 2500, I would be taking more advantage of the torque my engine has from 2000 RPM on up. Should I get a lower stall? How about a lock-up converter. Any input is appreciated. Dan |

Ideally your torque convertor should be matched to your camshaft duration. A real light car like a cobra changes things a little different though. A tight conv. wants to pull thru at stops but one as loose a yours will hardly ever "engage". This makes your trans run hot (not good for longevity). basically in a car that is not a race car selection is a compromize. A lock up would be a good selection but I'm not aware if any are made for the C4. They are usually built for overdrive transmissions. With the torque that a 489 makes, you can go a little conservative because you don't have to be right at peak torque rpm when you leave the line. -Greg |

Thanks for the compliment. I am sticking with an auto for now. Maybe a toploader in the future when I get tired of the auto's "efficiency". Greg, Thanks for the input. Cam is: Comp Cams Custom Hydraulic Roller Duration 248 Intake/252 Exhaust @ .050" Lift .630 Lobe separation 110 Peak torque is at 4700 rpms- 630 ft/lbs It has over 500 ft/lbs at 2500 rpms. Do you think a 2000-2500 rpm stall converter will be OK for mostly street use? Dan |

I have an FFR with a 390 in it now with a Tremec and thinking about converting to automatic. I am in the same boat with engine. Mine was built in Deland, Fl and is 412 horse/400 torque at the flywheel. The cam is .540 lift. My rearend is a 8.8 with 3.55 gear. I would be interested in knowing how this turns out for you. Also where did you get the transmission and how much did it cost to get it ready for the 427? Of course that is option A, option B is buying a new small block and automatic trans and selling the other set up. Than you. Paul |

IMHO the 2500 would be a good choice. The torque you've got will do all the work. High stall is for drag cars that only function well at high rpm's i.e. smallblocks. A transmission expert may have better insight but I have run a car with similar weight and power and it worked out well for me. -Greg |
