Richmond 5-Speed not going into 1st when engine warmed up?
After about 30 min of driving on the street it is very difficult to get it to go into first gear at a redlight or stop. Sometimes when i do get it to go in after fighting with at a stop it seems to have a clunking sound when it goes in. Trans itself when driving is fine and sounds good and i can down shift into first while driving. I checked fluid level and it only had about 3/4 of a quart that came out from drain plug. Not alot of metal on magnet maybe 1/8" to 1/4" but nothing bigger then dust. Not sure what fluid original owner had in it but it is a dark red. Any thoughts on possible issue?
I was going to replace it with Mobil One Syn LS 75w90 Gear Oil.... any thoughts on best fluid for Richmond Trans? Its hooked up to 427 SO thats running at 590hp and 415 ftlbs. Light street use, no track at the moment.

Speak to Randall at Cobra Valley performance about his ulta shift.Everyone that uses it rave about it. I`m waiting for some for my TKO. Check on recommended fluid for Richmond as normally not as heavy as you want to replace with. Both GM and Red line also make good replacements

I don't offer this as a diagnosis of your problem, but food for thought. I started having intermittant problems shifting my Richmond 5 speed. It would sometimes be hard to put into first at a stop sign, and sometimes the shifter was hard to move in 3rd/4th. I pulled the shifter and found a small piece of steel debris that occasionally restricted movement of the shifter rails. With the debris removed, it works great.

I was thinking the same thing as it's much easier to check that first before dropping Tranny. Will look at that.
I will do some research on that additive.... i always hate the idea of additive's but do you think its safe long term and won't eat syncro's?

Neverwouldof,
If your clutch does not fully disengage after it warms up, the slight drag on the disc will make shifting difficult. The more drag the more difficulty.

Yes the clutch is ok, i checked that first. It doesnt start catching til clutch is about half way out.
