Richmond Road race vs Super Street

Is there any difference in the Road Race trans vs the Super Street other than the Super Street comes with a shifter?

Any certain reason that you're looking at Richmond transmissions? Tremecs are cheaper (about $1400 cheaper), rated for the same amount of torque, and they come with shifters too.

Yes there is something about the syncros being a different material.

The super street 5 speed is actually a wide ratio 4 speed with an overdrive ( 5 speed) like the tremecs. 4th gear is 1 : 1 , with 5th being the overdrive.

The richmond 5 speed and road race 5 speeds are true close ratio transmissions ( 5th gear is 1 : 1) , with the road race version having different internals ?synchros, blueprinted vs the street version.

Snakebit In the info I have the only different is the gearing for overdrive. Not 100% sure but some racing forums only let you run a 1-1 top gear. The changes I was told from Richmond that the internals are bigger and stronger. The parts from the super street will not work or fit in the orginial 5 speed box or the road race box. I am happy with my 6spd richmond. The only down side of buying it was not finding out about the 450 HP and Torque until after owning it. The only advantage of owning a TKO 600 is shifter locations and reverse switch in the trans. It seams that this trans needs another $800.00 to make it better for higher HP cars. They blueprint it, polish the gears, cyrno and heat treat the gears for stronger strength. The Richmond trans, last I heard was using 9310 steel for the internal parts. The TKO are running 4615. If you are looking at getting a new trans for the cobra, the super street is a drop in and has over drive. TKO has a different out put yoke and is wider than the Richmond. You will have to check out which side the speedo mounts to. Rick L Happy holidays.

Thanks Rick for the info. I was wondering if the strength of the internal was any different. But as you stated the internals are beefed up from the standard street 5 speed with the real difference being in the gear ratios and final overdrive.

The guys at ERA told me that the shifter location on the 5-speed Super Street with OD doesn't work on an FIA "unless you want a car that looks like it belongs to Herman Munster". I don't.

As a consequence, I'm interested in the 5-speed Road Race: what gear ratios did you choose for 1st through 4th, and what rear-end ratio do you have? How do you like your set-up?

Old thread, but maybe....

Jeffy, did you ever get that Richmond roadrace and what do you think of it?

I'm considiering one. 3.04 first and 1:1 in fourth and the 3.09 rears.

(The chice is between an Astro T5 with "all kinds of upgrades" and a Richmond. The price is the same... Could even get a 6- speed richmond, but I consider the 5 sp roadrace the be better up to the job...
