t5 differences
could somebody enlighten us on the differences between the astro and g force t5 transmissions and some of the others being sold as super duty units such as the levy t5.
everyone knows the tko's are built like a tank and take all abuse and are pretty much all built to the same specs. how are the stronger t5's built, who makes the gears, etc., stuff like that. let's say if someone had to make a choice between the above three, what information would he use to make the choice. thanks. |
I'm a toploader guy. A Big In/Big out heavy duty toploader will take all the abuse you can throw at it.

I fyou have a chance to talk to Gordon Levy , he can probably give you some insight into how to make a High HP T5 survive.
It seems to have much to do with how the gears are designed to mesh without putting undue stress on the case. I believe Gordon uses Astro Performance gears along with some of his own design/manufacture to build his "Super Duty" T5 transmission. Bob |
i always wondered where levy got his internals. i think he boasts a 1 piece shaft integral with a gear or something like that, and i think some of the others have said theres is two piece so if you tear up a gear you just replace the gear, but i'm not certain this is comparing the same thing.
i'm surprised there is not more input on the differences of the t5's since there are a few to choose from. anybody know who's would be stronger? there's the 9310 gear set, the shaft reinforcement plate, at one time g force made a case, astro has some kind of complex helical cut... |
I am a G-Force/Astro dealer.
Either one makes a good product, but Astro's gears are a little tougher. Their 3rd gears are wider and this seems to be the weak link in the G-Force boxes. The Astro A-5 is rated for 650hp/550lb-ft of torque. The gear set is changed to a higher alloy, straighter cut (but not spur gears) gearset. The mainshaft is also upgraded, and a cluster shaft support is added. Compared to a TKO (I sell those too), the T5 is about 25 lbs lighter, plus you can shift them a little quicker and at a little higher rpm. |
I am also a Gforce/Astro dealer as well as a couple of companies you probably haven't heard of. We do use different parts for different uses but the single biggest reason ours last is the guy who builds them. Travis runs LR East and is the best trans builder I have ever seen. He's worked with me for almost 10 years and is incredibly talented.
I have also found that the type of clutch is really important. Most 10.5" clutches can't take high RPM abuse for long and most trans failures we can track down to the clutch. This is one of the reasons for the development of out superlite clutch and flywheel systems. I have T5's that have been running AI and AIX for years in Mustangs with no issues. We built one of our SD T5's several years ago for a customer that was racing a coupe with a 302 in it. The owner upgrade to a 600+hp stroker windser and has been racing this same SD T5 for 3 years behind this engine with no problems. I really can't explain it and we never ment that trans to be used with that kind of power. He says he'll upgrade to a super alloy version from us when he blows this one up. We have warn out T600's in half a race season behind some our our higher torque road race cars. |
So Gordon what is the price of your Super Stout T-5? And what clutch do you recommend?
