I have a TKO 600 that jumps out of fourth gear very easily. If driving in 4th and you just bump the shift lever it will jump out of gear. None of the other gears do this so I was wondering if there is an adjustment for gear engagement. I bought the transmission with the engine so I don't have a service booklet for it.

Is your shifter boot/trim plate a little closer to the shifter handle in 4th gear than in 2nd?

One of our TCC members, SSSammy, had his not holding gear. He tried many things including pulling the tranny and having it looked at. Bottom line was the rubber was binding on it and pushing it out of gear. |
DK -- I know you have a Unique, but here's a shot I did for ERA boots that have a particular peculiarity that makes them pop out of third gear if not spread properly -- and the solution is really easy, you just pull them up. I'm including it here just to underscore that there's a 99% chance that the boot is the problem.:)

Does your TKO-600 have the original red shifter? Aftermarket shifters have shift stops that shift stop bolts loosen and cause not full engagement of 2-4-R or 1-3-5 gears. If you are looking for a service manual I have them or it is available on the www.ttcautomotive.com site. The shifter boot has been know as a problem source. Good luck, |
I replaced the rubber boot that came on my car with a soft leather boot that does not bind the shifter.
I used the chrome mounting ring from the rubber boot to secure the replacement leather boot. The leather boot seems to let a bit more heat through but it has not been enough to be bothersome. Mike |
A shifter boot ring can help if it is the boot pulling
I replaced my 3550 with a new TKO600 in my ERA last year. While the transmission was a direct swap (e.g., bolt holes, overall size) the shifter collar and thus shifter was a bit taller above the transmission tunnel by 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch. I also installed a new shifter boot but it looked overly expanded. It seemed to "pull" on the shifter somewhat depending on the gear I was in. I called ERA and they sold me a 1/2" thin ring that mounts below the chrome shifter boot ring and the carpet. This raises the shift ring and boot so the boot does not pull on the shifter as much. Once the ring was painted black and installed above the black carpet it is bearly noticable.
