what shifter should i use
I will be installing a top loader in my kit car soon and was wondering if there any things to look out for. I have the tranny and a hurst shifter with all the bracket and linkages, I will need to get a shorter stick than the one I have. Also I was wondering what clutch set up and throwout berring should I use.

Need more variables. Which top loader, with which tail shaft and where is the shifter mount? Some shifters are obsolete as are the rods. I actually made mine out of a collection of parts. If I wanted it quick and dirty I would have just bought all the "right" parts from David Kee. He has the right stuff but at a premium (which I understand now!) I ended up using heim joints with bent tubes (Nascar style). Works for me but not too original, much stronger though. Then there's the right stick to use. I got mine from Cobra Restorers AND then made a special bracket to locate it correctly! I spent probably 16 to 20 hrs just on my shifter! Good luck.

I scoured high and low for a mid mount to replace the rear mount shifter I had (original from my 67 mustang). I had wanted an original Ford with the lockout reverse. I called around and found someone in the mid atlantic area that had what I was looking for. If you need the information, PM me and I will send you the contact. He even had the correct shift lever, however, I had already gotten that from ERA.

Check out longshifters.com They make a truely first class shifter setup. I purchased one from Summit, my mistake, as it was over a $100 higher than purchasing it directly from Longshifter, but at the time I didn't know about longshifter. They are the shifter recommended by Richmond for their Super T-10. Their quality is light years above Hurst. They have numerous models and I would recommmend the model which has Heim adjustable shifter arms. They have some models designed for the Cobra and a large selection of shifter handles.
