Preferred clutch disengagement/engagement
I'm a drag racer from the 80s that after retirement bought a B&B Cobra with a 351w 475-500HP, Tremec T5. I'm learning alot on the boards and will be an active member. My question is, I have a cable style clutch and I see that many Cobras have Hydraulics. I'm use to the hard linkage. What is the preferred method for reliability and feel. Would I be able to switch over to other styles without a problem.

Welcome to the forum. My car has a cable, too, but I would rather have hard linkage. I can't stop driving long enough to fabricate something. Cables break and the hydraulics don't seem to be much better than cables. Some friend's that have hydraulics have had them break or leak or both. Either way have fun with your ride and post some pictures. By the way, where are you located? |
Hydraulic is what most Cobra guys run and allows the most amount of tweak-ability (if that's a word).
The only issue with clutch cables is that they can stretch with higher performance clutch kits. You can switch over as long as you feel comfortable with adding a clutch pedal that can use a clutch master cylinder. Also, the slave cylinder will have to be mounted in the trans tunnel. |

You can change it to mecanical if you want to.
You can modify an old style mechanical cross over and linkage (an old chevy type). I guess Fords possably had it also. I have always been a chevy guy. This is the first Ford that I have owned. I guess you could set it up to pull instead of push. That is unless you want to change the bell housing and clutch fork. At least my cable clutch is a pull anyway. You then could add different holes in the cross over to change the throw of your clutch fork. It would be a quite a bit of work and the cable seems to work fine and has for quite a few years. Terry |
I have 26,000 miles on my cable and I have adjusted it once. I have 4 or 5 clutch master cylinders and a few slave cylinder on shelf in the back room from my buddies who have hydraulic systems.
My cable does not leak:) and always works Dwight |
I've got over 24k miles on my Tilton hydraulic bearing. I also have a Centerforce 11" Dual Friction clutch.
