Vulcanize a tire ?
Well I just got my first tire puncture on my rear Goodyear Eagle F1. It was at night so I had to be flat bedded home. Fortunately only 5 miles away. Thank you AAA!
I must have run over something big as after I plugged the hole, I still have a slow leak and have to fill a few Lbs every couple of days.
Not to be a cheap skate, but at over $400 for the tire and only 1500 miles on it, my thought is to have it vulcanized.
Any suggestions with vulcanizing? Anyone know a place in South Jersey that does this?

If by "vulcanized" do you mean to have it removed from the wheel and a rubber patch applied to the inside? If so, that's what I would do. Get it rebalanced after the procedure.
I'll bet it was a rear tire.

if the mechanic has very pointy ears you're assured of a good Vulcananization :)

Thanks Bob and yes it was a rear tire. The Eagle F-1's have a very wide pattern and of course I picked up something between the treads |

Yep... patch from the inside. Kind of a pain but much cheaper than replacing a $400 tire.

You're just patching. "Vulcanization" is the chemical process of "curing" rubber.
If you patch you should never ever race the car. For street use you'll be OK - I have a patch in one of the tires on my truck - but there is now a weakness at that spot.

No, not racing the car. So I'll be taking the wheel and tire off and trying the patch route.

It's worth a shot to fix it.
We use to put what we called a "boot" or large vulcanized patch on the inside of the tire when a plug wouldn't hold.
Recently most Major Tire Shops won't do this, especially if the steel wire is damaged by the nail or whatever punctured the tire, I think it's a liability matter, they can't even sell used tires in Ca. and AZ anymore.
if the wire mess is not damaged a good old patch and perhaps a tube will work, but don't go too fast...you never know. ;)
Good luck, find a good old time gas station or small tire shop...they will most likely fix it.

Well Bill you might be right, I called out to five different shops and all said no can do. I did find, as you also suggested, a small shop that would do it but there was no guarantee it would hold up. At this juncture it appears I'm going to spend the $400 or so for a new tire. :CRY: |

What did you use to plug the hole? We used to use rubber plugs and vulcanizing rubber cement from NAPA. It would literally melt the rubber plug into the tire. Then after we let it cure, we used a die grinder with a scotch brite pad and buffed up the inside of the tire. A patch was then applied.
As long as the cord (steel or whatever) wasn't cut, it was safe to do whatever. If the cord had strands broken, it was for street use only.

I patched tires in the 70's as a teenager at the Sears Auto Center and tubed them when necessary as well. Tubes can blow out as I recall. |
