Dyno in North Jersey

I've posted a dyno thread on Shop Talk Forum but just to let NJ owners know that Bruce's Speed Shop has a brand new dyno. It is built into a trailer and is portable. However, due to it getting cold out he is only going to have it available for another week or two or three.

The dyno was invaluable in assessing my engines weak points. It was not even close to having the hp I expected, although I had the potential. After several runs and some minor adjustment I am raising power and torque to the level I originally expected of my engine.

Worth every penny.

Rates are as follows:

$75 for two consecutive runs
$105/hr for tuning (runs included)
$800 if you or a group want it for the day
$1,250 if you want it at your site (within a 50 mile radius of the shop)for the day..............

PS: Dyno will be winterized at the end of this month, now is the time to book your appointments before it's to late.....

Digging up an old one

Bill/Roscoe-
In terms of the tuning, I assume they read the prinouts and tune accordingly? How much actually tuning do they do? Is it limited to carb jetting or do they adjust advance curves and things like that? I guess my question really is, what do you get for $105/hr other than the use of the dyno and printouts? I am considering doing this . . .

Maybe we could get a group discount if others are interested.

Thanks,
Mike

Chaplin,
No one touched my car. I did some minor adjustment. Paid my 75 bucks for the two/three runs. Faxed the results to Demon and followed their suggestions. Went back a week later, paid another 75, and had a significant increase in hp.

Another guy there with me, also with a Cobra, went with the 105 and it was a waste of his time and money. I think my way got the better of the deal.

I did mine a month ago. It was well worth it. I did 6 or 7 runs. I was there for over three hours, had the front carb off four times for jet changes, and we finally upgraded the metering plate and made jet changes and the cost was little over 200 bucks. I fixed a lean spot at 3500 to 4400 rpm that I didnt know existed. If you check my gallery I have the dyno runs produced from Bruce. Before and after.

PS: he checked the advance curve also. He said whoever set up my distributor knew what he was doing...which happens to be Dean Woodruff@ House Of Cobras

How long is a "day"? And is there any chance it's an AWD dyno?

(Honest inquiry)

It is not Steve.

Thanks Roscoe.
What did they do, look at the a/f chart and give you recommendations on the proper jetting?

Dane-
Did you have to bring the jets and new metering plate or did they supply the parts? Also, those numbers are real wheels correct? Very impressive. I read recently in one of the magazines that you can expect about an 18% loss in power from your crank to your real wheels, so you are putting out some healthy numbers at the flywheel.

He provided all the parts, labor and knowledge. Since I have two carbs, he explained in detail which carb and curcuit he was going to work on first and why. This even included a full tour of his shop(which is awesome)He even has a line/hose braiding machine.

I left with a much better understanding of how dual carbs work, and a ton of compliments on my car.

I am guessing that the engine is turning 540HP at the flywheel using the 18% rule....the thing is full of piss and vinegar.

Demon told me to jet down two at a time, front and back, add a 1" / 4 hole spacer and change the progressive link to a one to one. That's basically it and it added a ton of hp. from that I jetted down two more numbers, front and back, and I've settled in there.

A day is an 8 hour day. You can rent it for the day (along with an employee to run it) for $800 (check their web site for current prices). Is it an AWD dyno, no, it is not. Unless Bruce sees justification in the AWD business, it is not worth his $$$ ($45,000+ worth) to upgrade the dyno to AWD.........

Chaplin,

Provided you have a Holley/Demon carb, Bruce's should have everything in stock to tune it properly. if you have an Edlebrock carb set up on your car, he will not touch most of the carb, as tuning them is a true waste of time.

Bill, why do you say tuning the edelbrock is a waste of time, I have one on my car, it seems ok, am I missing some horsepower with it?? mine is a 750 cfm, engine is from the engine factory, 351w, supposed to be 425 hp and 415 ft lbs of torque. always wanting more!!!:3DSMILE:

mrmustang 10-12-2003 12:43 PM

Gordon,

The chassis dyno has proven that the Edelbrock carb is not that great for making horsepower. For the bolt on and forget crowd, or the street rodder who does not care about performance, the Edlebrock is tough to beat. For the guy who wants the most out of his drivetrain, the Edelbrock is not the way to go. Again, numbers proven on a chassis dyno speak for themselves. On average, a 20-65HP increase just from switching carbs is not unheard of (and this is at the rear wheels no less).......

Mr Mustang which carb do you recommend to rum on 302 5.0 mustang engine? I was told that it is currently pushing out 275 ponies at the flywheel. %/

Thanks

mrmustang 12-05-2003 03:35 PM

Holley 04776C, same one I have on my small block slightly warmed over 5.0L. See my tagline under my user name...That is at the rear wheels.
