Recycling Used Oil?
For those of you that change your own oil, I was wondering if you can tell me where you bring your old oil to be recycled?
Thanks for your help. |
Same place I buy it!
I buy it at Autozone. I didn't know they recycled until I asked. I would imagine that there are places like that around your house.

Most Auto parts stores recycle oil - PepBoys etc. Also, call your county recycling center. They usually offer one day a month when they accept Hazardous waste (Paint, oil etc.)
|
Hum- I didn't think Pep Boys or AutoZone would take used oil, but then again, I never did ask.
And on a related question, what do you bring the oil back in? Do you refill the empty quart containers, fill gallon jugs or do you have a large container that you can pour out like a gas can? |
I went to Home Depot and bought one of their 5 gal buckets and a lid (usually holds two oil changes). Then I take it down to the recycling center "The MET" whatever that stands for. There are several around town and they are open 24/7 and it is free.

Container
I bring it back in the container that I drain it in to. The type that you buy at the parts store with a lid.

I thnk that is you sell new oil, you must accept used oil for recycling. Parts stores around here often tell you, "The drum is full, come back next week." and then repeat that phrase again next week.
|
i save my empty windshield washer jugs and laundry soap jugs. and just drop it off at the recycling center. i didnt know parts stores took drain oil? huh...

We store it in an old kerosene container and drop it off at the local Jiffy Lube. No charge to recycle.

I bought an oil container. Couldn't have been more than $10, includes a really wide/low funnel. Can drain directly into it if you wish.
Holds about 2 gallons. Buy the oil at Walmart, return it to pepboys. :) -steve in nj- |
In NJ, a local full service gas station takes my used oil with no questions. I have been taking my oil there for years. Also your county will accept used oil at it's recycling center. At the county center, you need to determine if you can pour your oil into a holding tank or do they require individual oil containers to be permanently left behind.
I use an inexpensive plastic 5 gallon gas can for storing and transporting the oil. I have a Dodge Cummins Diesel pickup and a Jeep Wrangler (as well as a Cobra) so I can get quite a bit used oil in a hurry (especially with a 100+ mile round trip daily commute). Robert |
The darn oil is so clean when it comes out of the Cobra that I run it another few thousand miles through the Dodge Caravan...
When it comes out of the Caravan I put it on the curb in plastic containers on garbage day and the city takes it... Cool! |

Used to the same as you when I lived in Colo--now the environmentalidits have control--you have to take it to a qualified recycle center yourself now- Don't even ask about Washington---I used to have to drive 90mi rt to dispose of my boat's diesel oil(8 quarts + 2 filters)and pay $25 to boot:eek: Just wait they environmentalidits will soon discover you in Ohio:LOL: %/ then your curbside oil disposal will be a nitemare |
Near me
There are several "honor" type unattended oil drop off points. personally, I do care about the environment...and while there are extremists on BOTH sides of the issue, there is no question that many people are abusive of this potentially beautiful world, which is all we have to live on....

Around here Autozone takes it but only 5 gals at a time, then also a majority of the oil change places also take it usually the same conditions only 5 gals at a time. At the oil change places they will take the containers that you place it in but at Autozone you have to take back your containers and dispose of them yourself.

I just put it at the curb with trash and the recycle unit picks it up
for free. |
The local Wal-Mart's around my area also have a used oil collection container, but you have to drop it off during auto center hours. After hours, they lock it up.

Used oil...
...in New York any place that sells new oil must accept used oil for recycling. I buy my Castrol and Valvoline at Wally World in the 5 quart containers....cheaper than I can buy it wholesale! Put the used stuff right back in the 5 quarter and drop it at the local quick lube place.
I also have some 5 gallon used anti-freeze bulk chemical containers that my local Wynns distributor gives me so he doesn't havta' pay to dispose of them. The "oil change technician" at Delta Sonic gets all excited when I bring one in to dump...Hey, do you want the old container?" Nope, I say and he acts like he just scored a major deal....
