NJ Title Information
Guys, I am close to buying a '65 Cobra replica from Georgia. Last year I bought a '76 TR6 from Georgia that was not previously titled in Georgia and the NJDMV made me go back and get the seller to first title the car in that State and then (and only then) would they title the car for me in NJ. So here is where it gets interesting...in Georgia they did not and will not now title cars pre '67. Therefore, there is no way for me to get Georgia to title the car..all I can get is a bill of sale and I guess proof that Georgia did indeed register the car for the past 10 years. How will NJ respond to this?
Thanks, Josh |
Josh - this is a huge risk. I strongly suggest you make a trip to the DMV in Trenton (do not bother with your local office) and explain your story to a real person BEFORE you lay down your $$. They are generally very accommodating and knowledgeable, but obviously they won't go outside the rules.
You may be in for a nightmare otherwise. Just my $.02.... Good luck:) |
If the car has been previously registered in Georgia as a "vintage" automobile (aka: as a 1965 Ford) in the sellers name, then it comes with a transferrable registration card, as any car 25 years old or older in Georgia never had a title issued in the first place. Very similar to the old NYS transferrable registrations. Ask the seller if this is what he has. If so, then along with it you will need a notarized "Bill of Sale" from the state of Georgia (there is a state form for this which the seller must provide). After that, you take that paperwork to the NJ MVS (Motor Vehicle Services), fill out a form for the out of state title/paperwork, and go from there. You can then register the car, but your actual NJ title will not be issued on site. Instead, it goes to the Trenton office of MVS, they then contact Georgia, and when all paperwork is confirmed as genuine, NJ will issue you your title. Usually takes 3-6 weeks for your actual title to show up in the mail. But again, as soon as you submit your paperwork, you can register the car........
Hope you find this helpful. Sincerely, Bill S. I have bought several cars from Georgia over the years, again as long as the car had been previously registered to the seller in that state, it is an almost non issue with NJ MVS |

Bill and Bruce thanks very much for the information. It's incredible how many people have given me so many different points of view on the matter (all of which I appreciate). Bill, it seems like you have done this many times and I will indeed ask those questions to the seller. Thanks again...Josh
