Florida Title
Ok, I am looking into the title thing and getting information. Like most I would like to get it titled as a 1965. this is a rolling chasis deal. Word on the street is you can title these cars as 65 in Florida. So I look into it. This is what I was told. A title company down there can do it for a minimal fee, plus the tax on what it was sold for. I was told I can put $10k and presto a 1965 Title. Is this legit? Or is this a big mistake? Any help would be great.

If you were told this by a legit title company, I would run away from them as fast as you can. With all of the legal loopholes being closed by 95% of the US states, it would be highly unlikely that any title company would risk a breaking a federal law and titling the car as something it is not. I warn you here, in public view, for there are several different Motor vehicleagencies that now scan these forums for posts just like yours..........

This is what I assumed. I also thought of the "people are watching" thing, so I am not out to ruin the day. However this is an open forum and maybe this question would help others. As I shop this title proposal was offered. i do not want to do things illegal that will catch up to me. i also did not want to spend the $$ and run into a brick wall.
Why is it so important to Title as a 1965. What is the benefit other than saving registration fees? Anything. i appreciate the insight. |
Titling as a 1965 certainly won't add to bragging rights because we all know it's not a '65. The deal in CA with our SB-100 registration system, is that when we go for the initial smog test, we can ask that the car be tested by body style...which is 1965 per the regs. That means it winds up being smog exempt. No smog tests ever! And that's a beautiful thing. As far as saving registration fees, I wouldn't try to circumvent what the state says it's due. It could very well come back to bite you.

Fla. rules are "slightly" different from rules in other states. If you title it in Fla., what applies in CA won't matter.
Only advantage I could see titling a car as a 65 might be insurance (and probably not that even). Polution regs for a 65 are exactly the same as for an 05 (none). Fla. has two categories for this "type" of car (remember even original Cobras were assembled cars not manufactured cars, i.e., Shelby America did not manufacture the cars but "assembled" them). Fla. has separate rules for assembled cars (called either kit cars or replicas). Read the rules "carefully" (they are online). Each has its advantages and disadvantages. There are states which still "title" the car based on the year it's a replica of, but only advantage I've heard of is getting "antique" license plates. If you plan to take the car out of Fla. you may find having a Fla. title "1965 Replica Cobra" isn't worth $10k in NH. |

I just titled my 2005 midstates as a 2005 because of a warning by my insurance agent. His feeling was I might never have a problem,however, if there was a massive claim, an investigator would spot the car as a kit and claim I fraudlently insured my car as a 65' and say they insured a 65' not the car invloved in this accident. At that point they could walk from the claim. This was scarry. My insurance was about the same with Haggarty as with Taylor. My only additional expense was Ct. property tax. Maine has just shut down these title companies, and Calif. is closing in. I also realize this is an open forum and hope not to offend anyone, I'm not a lawyer. I suggest you ask one for advise. I might be all wet. Good Luck |
