Looking for shop
Hi,
Can anyone recommend a shop or mechanic in the tri-state area? I have an ERA that needs some more work -- more than I am comfortable to do. I live by the Hudson River just south of Tarrytown. I have tried a couple of places in the past that should have been good, but I think they put the junior guy on the car since their real business was "fancier" (read: more expensive) historic race cars. Still charged me a small fortune, but the work they did was not good. Omathisen |
If you are including Northern CT, garage is about 1 hour north of ERA in New Britain:
Alan Wexelman 360 Somers Road Route 83 Ellington Airport Ellington CT 860-875-0542 Alan rebuilt my side pipes and is currently installing power steering in the Cobra He built his own Late Model which races at Stafford Speedway |
I have sent many Cobra owners to this shop and all have been satisfied. He solved a suspension problem with a JBL that a couple of other shops could not fix.
Ask for Nick or Rob as they are the only guys who will work on your car. http://www.gsautoworks.biz/ |

Thanks for the leads. I will follow-up.
And Ron, I have sent you my work list, and am also asking what kind of shop you have and your work experience. Where is Airmont? I have the impression it is right across the river off 87? OMathisen:) |
I have all my work done at HRE Motors in Freeport, NY (south shore on the island). Billy Andrews is the owner and is a Shelby dealer but specilaizes in all cobras. Many of his clients own ERA's. His telephone number is 516-378-5461He also has a flatbead towing company he works with that can pickup and deliver your car (Lombardo Towing) - price is very reasonable.

Oma-
If you're near Tarrytown, you're probably not more than 1 1/2 hours away from ERA. Depending on what you need done, they might be able to do it for you. And at least you know they know what they're doing. Might be worth giving them a call. |

Thanks again for the leads. I am following up.
As for ERA, I was up and talked to Peter Portante, but he seems to have a waiting list with no end in sight. Billy Andrews actually built the car before he became a Shelby dealer, but our schedules have not matched. OMathisen:) |
the obvious choice IMHO is G&S as Racer X stated....best bang for the buck.
They work on everything...vintage racers, Cobras, exotics, you name it.... very reasonably price and they are really nice guys. |
G&S autoworks
Rob and Nick do some incredible restorations on some very historic racecars. I have seen quite a few Cobras come thru their shop this last year, a race car and a lot of street type Cobras. They must be doing something right.

I can provide another vote for G&S Autoworks.
They have pretty much handled all the maintenance and "sorting out" issues on my factory built ERA 427. Problem for you is that they are probably 2 hours or so from your location:CRY: CB |

:) Hi again:
Thanks for the helpful leads. As it turned out, Billy Andrews of HRE had an opening, and that is where my car went. He did a great job, and the car is running as good as ever. I picked it up last Saturday, between rain storms, and drove it home. :) Omathisen ERA 427 |

I told you, HRE does great work. When it comes to my Cobra, they are the only ones who I will allow to put a wrench on it. Mine is out there now for it's annual spring tune up. Jim |
