NJ inspection
Well we finally finished our NJ inspection....I just wanted to let everyone know that there is a big sign at the Hammonton inspection station that it is closing for good at the end of August. I believe this means that there will only be one special vehicle inspection station in NJ? I've heard that the other one is a lot harder to go through. If anyone has an upcoming inspection and has questions let me know. We passed for all the things we thought we'd fail on and failed on everything we didn't even think about.

Morristown, NJ and Asbury Park will be your next two choices. Morristown is the most "user friendly" of them all, enough said.

Forget Asbury Park, whatever the extra cost and time to get to Morristown just do it. They understand the cars much better.

items that failed
What were the items that didn't pass?

They are really big on items that rub, even if they're wrapped in stainless,
Throttle cable wasn't tied down to their approval, The fuel line and positive wire to the batter can't be on the same side of the frame. The oil line (we have an aux oil cooler) which is braided in stainless was rubbing against the block. Our bottom radiator hose went under the frame. There is NO way but to route it that way. We argued that the oil pan would hit way before it took a radiator line so they let it go. All the items could have taken a half hour to fix. Our original inspection was July 1st, we called the day after to reschedule and the earliest they could take us was on the 31st. The things we thought they'd bust us for...our tires stick out a good inch all the way around. They didn't check lights, brakes, turn signals, indicator lights, high beam, or anything that required a key(never gave them the key). |
I'm quite interested in hearing about the process as I will be going through it soon.
Specifically what paperwork did you file with the DMV with your application? How long did it take for you to get the call after sending in the paperwork? How long after the call was your inspection? How did you trailer your car there? Can you provide some details about your build? Thanks for any and all help you can provide. Ray |
We started the paper work process in the winter when we realized that when we bought the car the original owner never signed the papers. We bought the car in Colorado and trailer to NJ...over 5 years ago. Long story short, it took us a while to find him. They are a pain in the ass about the block numbers and transmission numbers. It took us a few back and forths (about 4-6 weeks) until they accepted the documents. It took us another 4-6 weeks to get the first inspection date. U-Haul has trailers for $50 for the day. Word of advice...don't tell U-Haul you have small truck or they'll never let you take the trailer. We have a Tacoma which is more they effective but they have heartburn every time. After the first inspection it took us 4 more weeks to get a re-inspection. We went up today and got the title work done, no problems there. Now we have to go to the DMV and get tags now that our insurance is in place. One headache that we were sweating about it the tax situation. Apparently you have to pay tax on everything you don't a receipt for. Our bill came to about $1700. We should be all set to get the car alignment and carb dialed in this week so WE CAN DRIVE IT!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for the information. Wish you the best of luck on finishing up the work on the car. Be sure to come to one of the events as we'd all like to see you there.
