Tom that stinks, get well pal. Let us know if it's going to be quicker, easier or necessary to make 4758 auto. Whatever it takes bud.

Agreed, It is not perfect. But much closer than the previous. To make matters even more stupid the mounting point is not exactly centered either. Can anyone explain why they would cast the center mounting point "Off Center"?

Yes, have seen a few manifolds where the bellcrank mount is not centred left to right and/or fore and aft.
Put it down to the designers of the manifold not taking their time in making sure of this critical point.

There is a set of 4 48IDA webers currently on sale with a "Buy It Now" on ebay #320464873066 for $1249.99 ending 12-27-09 at 17:00. They have some ugly paint on them and is chipping, a good soaking or media blasting will take care of that. Good price for anyone who's looking for a set.

Happy holidays

Not all carbs are created equal: how do Webers compare to say the Holley 4150 and 4160 series? Other carbs?

This is a very familiar scenario. Someone has an engine that runs fine on a four-barrel, decides to switch to Webers, and then the engine runs lousy. They spend days trying to tune it up but they can never get the engine dialed in. They say, "Everyone is right. Webers are a nightmare. I'm putting the four-barrel back on." The problem many, many times isn't the Webers but the engine.

A four-barrel will run decently with shaky compression, worn valves or valve seats, sloppy timing chain, etc. It's a very forgiving carburetor. Webers are not. They are very much precision instruments and if you have an engine that needs some attention but runs OK with a four-barrel, the Webers will never be happy until the internal issues are addressed. It happened to me and I'm sure many other people.

So true. Usually the last thing that someone who specializes in webers will look at are the carbs. I've only had to have mine adjusted once or twice and usually it's several hours of checking everything but the carbs. When everything is perfect, then it's on to the adjusting the carbs if they need it.

I would highly recommend Pierce Manifolds in Gilroy, Ca. (408) 842-6667. www.hotrodwebers.com I have purchased many webers, kits and parts from them over the years for customer cars and they are Weber gods. They know products inside and out, tuning, parts, etc. Taking the guess work out of it is worth the price of admission.
