48 IDA Air Cleaners

Help...I have a 48 IDA set up on my 289 FIA car with just screens. I just had the engine rebuilt due to damage from dust and grit being ingested into the engine and don't want to go through that again.

The K&N filters won't clear the hood. Any suggestions? The best alternative I've found are socks and they're not ideal.

I would appreciate any feedback. Thanks

Be prepared for really big fun, when you change to filters with any restriction, at all. They can be tuned, pretty well, but I'm just sayin', it'll take some serious tweaking.
(your timing sucks, I just sold my set of four cleaners at the Good Guys Swap Meet, in Scottsdale, a few weeks ago. $40 or $50, I think)

Hope you are not running those 48s on a tiny engine. The guys at Vintage Iron, by the Airpark, can help with them, if you need.

Thanks Karl. Vintage Iron just rebuilt the motor. Good guys.

I guess I'll just run the layered screens and soak w/WD40 every couple weeks.

I know it won't look as good or period correct, but if you want function and clean air, a two piece enclosure that surrounds the carburetors completely and then ducted to a large high flowing remote airbox with an R2C element would be the ticket in my eyes.

No single element per cylinder will flow as much air.

I considered building a big ugly box but, eventually gave up on the idea. Far from ideal, I run tea infusers on my carbs. Very fine mesh, some shaped.

I would use an air filter oil instead of WD-40. WD-40 has some solvents in it that the air filter doesn't. K&N makes a filter oil that I use.

Gun oil may work as it stays put..
Use this stuff on my wheels.

Here's some airbox ideas:

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ordered the layered screens as there's not enough clearance for anything else. I may fasten some foam element behind the hood scoop but am cognizant of killing airflow.

Thanks again.

These guys make a wide range of filters for custom applications and also make filters for the majority of the F1 grid:
