Jeff got a better picture of the stamped numbers? I can see the 300 but the other number to the left is unclear. What are the numbers on the other carbs

Ok I looked at some of mine. The number i could not read must be 48 IDA 4. What are the numbers on the other 3 where the 300 is?

What do these numbers mean?

“ 48IDA-4 ..... 419, 203, 300, 469 is what it looks like.”

Weber series numbers, starting with 001 and going up from there. In this case
203= the 203rd 48IDA-4 off their assembly line, and so on, and so forth.


The earlier the number, and the closest together, the more valuable they can be.

I will relay what I have collected the last two plus decades but you will have to make your own conclusions about manufacturing time frames.

48 IDA4 models were originally manufactured with 37 mm chokes for Dean Moon and his companies. Dean Moon's Moon and McKay companies sold no telling how many systems for Chevrolet or other GM powered applications. Geon® / BAP® sold loose carburetors as service items. The first mention in writing I have found for this specific model was included with two hand written personal letters Dean Moon mailed to a potential customer in 1966. The 48 IDA4s were very popular in marine applications. Dean Moon also sold 48 IDA1 models that Shelby American claimed in one catalog to be the sole importer of. Two letters from Dean Moon to a potential customer and one GEON® catalog are the only printed references I have every found for the 48 IDA4 in the 1960s. If you have some other document(s), I would love to hear from you.

E.Weber normally, there were some exceptions I have seen, assigned serial numbers to their performance and racing carburetors across all model lines for many years. The 46/48 IDA 2C series of carburetors had serial numbers dropped in/by August 1970 as in September a two character date code replaced the serial number on new units from then on.

So far, my list of identified 48 IDA4 serial numbers ranges from 1 to 5030 but be aware there are counterfeit 48 IDA4s out in the world and have been since at least 1971. I have seen two serial number 1 units at the same swap meet. Some copies are excellent, and some are horrible in appearance; function wise I have no idea.

Personal correspondence from Dean Moon to a potential customer post marked June 28, 1966, includes an undated “WEBER THE KING OF CARBURETION” news letter advertising 48IDA1 carburetors for custom induction systems for a variety of American V8 applications, includes an undated copy of a typed spare parts list for “48 IDA – IDA 1 - - 46 IDA 2 – 46 IDA 3 48 IDA 4”.

Personal correspondence from Dean Moon to the same potential customer dated December 6, 1966, includes an undated “WEBER CARBURETION BY MOON Bulletin #66-15” news letter advertising 48IDA-1 carburetors and other products for a variety of applications, includes an undated copy of a typed spare parts list with more items than the list mailed in June for “48 IDA – IDA 1 - - 46 IDA 2 – 46 IDA 3 48 IDA 4”.

December 23, 1966 dated "SHELBYAMERICAN PARTS BOOK”, "Shelby American, Inc. is the exclusive distributor for Weber 48-IDA-1 carburetors and parts...for the United States."

February 1967, GEON, WOODBURY NEW YORK, "48IDA4 COBRA (SHELBY)", no pricing available, under price is “P.O.A.”, printed in U.S.A. This is the earliest catalog mention and only mass printed and published information during the 1960s related to the “48 IDA4” that I have located to date. This is a Geon publication and not one from Weber, Moon, Ford, or Shelby. It implies that the 48 IDA4 with 37 mm chokes was the service replacement for the 48 IDA/IDA1 models with 42 mm chokes in Shelby’s cars.

March 1, 1967 dated, Soc. p. Az. EDOARDO Weber 48 IDA - 48 IDA 1, 46 IDA 2 - IDA3, “WEBER HAUPTCATALOG – ERSATZ TEILE”, implies that 46 mm models are for “PORSCHE 904 G.T.” and that 48 mm models are for “8/C – V engines”, printed in Italy

1967 dated “GRATIOT AUTO SUPPLY – catalog”, has a section on Moon induction systems and their use of 48 IDA-1 carburetors.

Jeff, I don't mean to Hi-Jack your post, but I have a question about our Weber's.
Dan, we have a (Fully Polished Moon manifold, was told the only one ??) with 4-45DCOE that is made for a SBC, the numbers on them 3- have 6A, or 8A, and one is 7D, do we use the same chart for the DCOE's. These were purchased in 1970 (Manifold & Weber's) together from Dean Moon, of Moon Eyes, to be installed in our "Ramco" a 57 Healey chassis, hand-built fiberglass coupe body, and Corvette drivetrain. They were installed in 1970 when the all-new LT-1 Vette motor installed to replace the worn out 283.

45 DCOEs, I have no idea, never studied them.
