8.8" Setups? Where?
Guys:
Do you know anyone in the general area (even connecting states) that does good turnkey or "crate" 8.8inch setups? Looking at: 8.8" Ford with 9" ends, 31 spline axles, 3.55:1 gear, and an Eaton or detroit locker. I talked to Currie, but they are in Annaheim, CA.. $250.00 for freight. YIKES. Email or post here. Regards, Ozona |
Have you tryed Greg Moser? He is in Indiana.
http://www.moserengineering.com/mose...icalassist.htm They helped me cut down my rear end. Mark :) |
Thanks, I'll give them a ring, MUCH closer! :)
What did you get your 8.8 cut down for? |
Hello O,
I emtied the housing and sent it dow to them ($20.00 UPS). They cut and welded for $60.00. New axles were $300. Shipping back was $20.00. It took about one and a half weeks in all. No one can cut down the stock axles because they tapper down to save weight. Mark |
I'm figuring on going with 9" ends and 9" 31 spline axles. Have been so busy I haven't been able to get with Moser, but plan to.
What rims & tires do you guys have? Oz |
Why I cut down my 8.8
Ozona,
Sorry about taking so long to get back. I hope you had a great holiday season. I am using the pin drive wheels from TRIGO. They only come in one set back. Mark Smith told me that I could use the live 8.8 but I would have to cut it down 5". As it turns out 5.5" or even 6" would have been better. If ever someone does this again, I hope they talk to me first. It will save a bunch of $$. I still think that Mark was talking off the top of his head. They only have done the pin drive with IRS so thats where the problem could have come from. Anyway, good luck with your build. Mark:) |
Well, I've been off crusin for rear..er a rear.. or uh.. That never comes out right. How about looking for a place to get a good deal on an 8.8. :D
Didn't you guys know that Strange Engineering is just north of Chicago? I didn't just figured that one out. It's actually cheaper to buy it out of state and have it trucked in than to pay the goofy Illinois sales tax. I talked to DTS today, very friendly folks, spoke to, "Steve." www.drivetrainspecialists.com - advertises in MM&FF. Looks like it will be an 8.8" setup, 31 spline 5 lug axles, 9" housing ends, Eaton differential, 3.55 gears. They true the housing, weld the tubes on weld the housing ends on and powder coat or paint (your choice). Said about two weeks to build it. They offer used housings or new..although I don't know why you would want a new one when they're just going to bend/weld/powder coat it anyways. One more place to call, Moser. Ozona |
8.8 rear
Ozona,
I did talk to Strange before and yes they are $$$$. If you are going to do a lot of drag racing with 700-900 HP, that would be the way to go. I have heard that the 8.8 is almost as strong as the old 9" and there are a lot of aftermarket parts for them. I keep the c-clips because the Stainless Steel disc brake kit for the rear would not work with the c-clip eliminators. I hope the spring get together at Busse works out. I have just welded the front upper A arm locking brakets on last night so I am getting close. I am going to redo my oil lines and make a new gas peddel and that should do it for this winter. Good luck and keep me informed. Mark:) |
I'm not going to use the c-clip eliminator kit, it's a 9" housing end conversion..and then it uses 9" style axles.. I'm sure SSBC has a bracket for a 9".
I like the SSBC brakes, what about pads? The Baer guys said it could be hard to find pads for them in the future. All this "he said she said" stuff makes it fun to research before you buy! B |
Ozona,
How often are you going to need to replace the rear pads on a 2200 pound car? I have over 130K on my 89 Mustang GT and just checked the brakes before it got cold. It still has the original rear shoes. I also kept the information on the box that they came in. I am sure if I had to I could find them at the local auto parts store. It is not like SSB makes thier own pads. I think the guy was blowing smoke up your....... Later. Mark:) |
Good point there.
I talked to Moser, they say to screw the 8.8 and just put a 9" housing in.. Cheaper and better according to them. Is there any rhyme or reason to narrow the rear end more than a 86-93 Mustang? I'm not going to run pindrives. Got any pics of your SSBC kit installed? Bill |
Bill,
Yes I do have some pictures of the rear end with the brakes. Let me dig them up and I will e-mail them to you. Do I have your e-maiil address? Mark:) |

I, too, want to use pin drive, but not with the IRS. Can you give me all the details I need to modify the 3-link so that pin drive works? Should I get the pin drives from FFR or from Trigo where I plan to buy the wheels? Pete |
