Exhaust Leaks at Header

Hi all!

I put my motor back in, its fixed and stronger.

However, I have some big exhaust leaks at the head/header connection. Dont want to drive it much as it might mess up the exhaust valve at that port...

I'm either gonna put on new gaskets (perhaps turn em around) or just put on a bead of silicone.

If you would like to help me with the fix, please let me know.

If you have ideas, please let me know...

If you have a heated garage with a lift that we could use, that would be a plus.

Thanks,
CC

Use the blue fel pro header gaskets. never reuse header gaskets. Crank those little header bolts tight, then retighten again after a heat cycle or two.

cdog,

I use new Fel Pro gaskets and high temp sealer on both sides if its already had gaskets.
The best method for a new header is to use only the high temp sealer and no gasket, once a gasket is used the flange warps and you are forced to use a gasket, then its hard to get a permanent seal.

CDOG,

If you think header flange warpage is the culprit some times 2 gaskets per side with sealant can do the fix.
No lift here but plenty of heat and plenty of tools.
Call me if you would like to fix it at my house, I can help.

If you have warped flanges, cut the flanges between each of the pipes. Each pipe then has it's own discrete flange. This really helps on crappy headers with thin flanges. Some guys swear by soaking the header gaskets in water so they swell prior to install. Then they take a better "set" once heated, never tried it myself though.

Fel Pro solid copper header gaskets, and a bead of Ultra copper hi-temp RTV. No leaks.

I got these fixed, I think.... Used a ****load of red silicone, installed the gaskets backwards (flat side out as they fit better that way) cranked the headers down...

I think I might still have one small leak though.

In case you havent done this, it ain't easy.

The best gaskets around are Earl's and they are available from Summit!!!

They have an aluminum frame and graphite inserts. You tighten them once and forget them!!! The frames are reusable and the inserts are $18.00 or so I think.

I've run them a year now with no leaks!!
