SA2000 Helmets in Chicago
Anyone know of a good place to try on and buy G-Force, Bell or Simpson helmets in the Chicago area? I might be interested in bringing the Bumble Bee to Byron (as long as you guys do not laugh at my times, I am a beginner you know), and it looks like a helmet is required. I have considered Racers Wholesale or Jegs, but with the return that might be needed if it does not fit my skull full of thin air correctly, it may not be as good of a deal?
Also, any recommendations on helmets? I like the price of the Bell's, but question whether my head and income source are worth the savings. I like the Black Simpson and G-Force helmets, but I run warm as it is, I think my head would be baking in the sun with those. Tom |
Hey Tom,
Try out Chicago Cycle Center. Or any other motorcycle place. That is where I test out which helmet I want and then buy online. Try to remember that bell and simpson are not the only snell rated helmets out there. HJC, KYB, and other motorcycle helmet should meet Snell requirements and standards. sid |
Do you know what size hat you wear?
Small is 6 3/4-6 7/8 Med is 7- 7 1/8 Large is 7 1/4 -7 3/8 XL is 7 1/2 - 7 5/8 The track also rents em for $5.00 first come first serve. (They only have a couple) But that's like renting bowling shoes. I bought mine at a motorcycle shop. Don't forget they have to be full face with a sheild. You could probably get one on sale. They run anywhere from $80 to... skys (or your wallet) the limit. And if we didn't make fun of Marty why would we pick on you? |
Hmm, maybe I should dig up my pimp hat and see if it has a size in the brim! I would much rather rent bowling shoes than a helmet. At least with bowling shoes I have socks on. I did use a loaner helmet at the Richard Petty Driving experience, but that seemed different. They also put a disposable beanie on your head.
Darryl mentioned that he has some helmets, so I think I will try his on. Tom |
Hey Hey Hey ! Just you wait a minute buster!
I thought since you live down south you might have a cowboy hat and some cowboy boots ! Come on admit it you really like square dancing! Besides you leave my pimp hat out of this! You know pimping ain't easy! |
Don't worry about the color. You're only wearing the thing for a short amount of time anyway. I'm usually wearing mine about a half second LESS than Arcenio................Who said that?!

Oh Geez.....
September's coming sooner than you think...... They both appear to have mastered the "Burn-outs" now.... |
I need some major work on my Burn Outs, that is why I am looking forward to Byron!

Hey Tom ,what's with this motorcycle helmet thing? Has Maggie told that you look like a stud with a helmet on? And if thats the case you will be wearing it for a long time and the color could make a difference. Let me know, cause if it works for you...... P.S. Did the cowboy hat or pimp hat thing work?
|
Nothing to do with Maggie, just need a helmet for Byron and Road America!
Could not find either of the two hats! Must have misplaced the Cowboy hat after that night with just the hat and the gun holster! Tom |
Tom don't worry I got an extra sombrero around here somewhere:D
|
does the Sombrero thing work too? WOW
|
I just bought a G-Force Pro Force one for 249.99 which matches the best advertised prices from Fresh Air Systems in Arlington Heigfhts. Try www.freshairsystems.com

Do not buy a motorcycle helmet. Most tracks and events won't let you wear them because they don't have Nomex linings. If you catch fire the nylon lining melts to your face. I would hope you would spend the extra $150.00 for the Snell SA2000 rating. You have to be careful because many of the ads are missleading and say Snell approved which cycle helmets are. They are rated M and what you need is SA. Often the only difference is the lining.

John,
Thanks for mentioning the fact that NONE of the tracks are allowing motorcycle helments. I hope Tom hasn't bought one yet. Tom, There has to be several speed shops in the Chicago area. If all else fails go to the Summit web page, they have a very good system for measuring helment size. Additionally, they have a very good price on popular helments that are approved. Good luck. I was definately planning on going with the SA not the M approval.

At Chicago Indoor Raceway in Buffalo Grove there is a shop that sells helmets...as well as DRE INC/WREP in Streamwood
