Recent Route 66 Trip
Guys, I just completed a trip from Chicago down Route 66 (and up to Las Vegas) in my big block SPF. Car ran great, but struggled with the 120 degree heat a bit and also with the 10,000 ft. altitudes. Total trip was about 4,100 miles. Gessford Machine did a great job with the build on this motor a couple of years back...
I took the old road out there and then the interstates on the way back. It was really great how much attention the Cobra got from everyone along the route. I probably had 20+ people take pictures of the car. I'll post up some pics when available. |
man you sure know how to test your car! Sounds like you had a blast Chuck!I got some video from the track time we did at Mid-Ohio. Should have a video on cd soon. Just been lazy. Take care buddy!

Wow Chuck you lucky Cdog! What a trip that must have been. I have often thought of doing the same thing. Living in California with most of my relatives in the mid-west I have been on that road many times throughout the 60's and early 70's. I remember asking talk mom and dad several times to stay in the wigwam motel. Did you see the big green Sinclair dinosaur? Pretty cool stuff.
It was good to meet you at Victor and thanks for the pictures. |
I need to make that trip. It sounds so cool. I just need to install that rumble seat. Or take a different car.
|
Chuck,
Sorry I missed you at Victor Ford. I would like to catch up. How about you join us at QSL? It's open to anyone even people from WI! Sid |
cdog,
What a great trip. I just have to ask though what was your gas mileage? |
Yes, I'll try to do QSL!
My mileage was about 11-12 mpg on Route 66 -- BUT at least 15 mpg, maybe more, on the Interstates coming home. It was suprisingly good on the way home, just cruising at like 2,700 rpms. The amount of attention it got along the Route was truly incredible. It was nice to be able to show a Cobra to so many people and for them to actually see one being taken out on the open road, rather than at a car show. I think it heightens everyone's Cobra awareness. I'm not much for attention OR strangers (I like to think I have a kind of a sublime under-the-radar type cool) so that was a bit distracting and a little odd. Every hillbilly has to come up to you, touch the car, tell his "I used to own a COPO Nova..." story. Around here, its rare that someone says something about the car or gives it a second glance. But there's a lot of these Cobras in the Fox Valley, very few in Williams, AZ... |
Now I don't feel bad. That's the same mileage I get.
