Trailer Wanted
Before I go to a dealer I want to ask the members if anyone has a decent open car trailer for sale. I need it by mid-September so I don't have much time to look.

There are 2 double choices to make---aluminum or steel, 2 or 4 wheel brakes on sprung or torsion/flex axles----which I guess really comes down to aluminum or steel as I would recommend 4 wheel brakes and definitely the torsion flex axles--- Bob Brown had a nice one ask him about it---also you can go over to Adams in McHenry as they have a good selection---I bought my last 2 from Larry there --tell him we sent you |

sorry but I tryed to edit my post for Ralph---My trailer is a Featherlite 44 ft triple axle gooseneck---I tried to edit post to say I hadn't noticed he said open---But Bob Brown can come on here and tell you about the one he had Jerry |
I have a 21 foot all aluminum twin axle open trailer for sale, it weighs 1500 pounds. It is 3 years old, has a air dam on the front, 5,000lb winch and extra long (7 foot) ramps. It has maybe 2k miles on it. 9k new, will sell for 8k. It was custom made by trailer world.

Jeff, I would like a small, open trailer in the 14' to 16' range. I would probably only use it twice a year for a Chicago to Phoenix round-trip. A call to U-Haul informed me they want $722 for a one-way rental. :eek: Ralph |

Pay attention to the construction of the frame; there needs to be good support from the hitch to the front spring mount. Some trailers lack this and leave 3 feet or so with too little support; the trailer will bend at this point.
Depending on your tow vehicle, look for trailers with the axles not too far back. If the axles are positioned close to the rear, more of your weight will be on your tow vehicle. If you go the less expensive route, get pressure treated boards on the deck. If you need tires, get trailer tires. They can be run at 65 pounds which decreases the rolling resistance. I got 13.5 MPG last weekend to South Haven and back, hauling the Cobra and an extra set of tires. When I bought mine, I did some checking on the legal side of things; you need a break away kit in many states, hauling gas cans can be illegal, the license plate should be TB in Illinois; a TA plate is too light. I endorse the brakes on two axles; many inexpensive trailers only come with one set. Check the ride height; a taller trailer requires longer ramps. 44ft! Wow! I am looking for an alum. single axle trailer that would haul my Cobra with my Ford Exploder. I might be dreaming that it would haul the Cobra but I saw a single axle trailer that was used to haul a Porsche race car that weighed about the same and I could move it around unloaded quite easily. Exploder's aren't known for being good at towing, particularly with the weak auto tranny. With a distribution hitch, it is rated at 6,000# gross trailer weight. Don't think it will tow that much though. Need after-mkt brake system in the SUV and good brakes on the trailer to even have a chance. Does anybody have experience with this combo? Paul |
