I was told I should post this question here. Im from IL and the car is in WI..
Fairly new to this forum but I think its great. Full of usefull info. I have a question. A few actually. I am thinking about buying a classic roadster 2. The seller says the car was never titled and he only has the Manufacturers certificate of orgin MCO Is this common? I just want to make sure the car is actually his and I want to protect myself. What problems may I run into and how could I avoid them, All suggestions are appreciated. Thanks everyone. |
If that is all he has (and probably is) then you should find out what your
state requires to register it. Each state has its own requirements so someone from IL can probably help you on that. Know what you are getting into before you pull the trigger. It may be a simple visit, or not. |
Not knowing anything about IL or WI law, I would bet that one state is bound to be easier than the other. Surely we have CC members from both states who can chime in. If it happens to be the seller's state that is easier, then you might ask him to title it there and then sell you the car. Sometimes it is easier to title a Cobra in your state if it has already been titled in another.

Go to your local DMV
In Florida you cannot title a car with a MCO made out to another person. Check it out before buying, or better yet have the seller provide good title from his state with a bill of sale to you. Good luck.

Patrickt is right have him get a Wis. title first, the reason that he has not titled it then goes away. Like has he paid the taxes ? How did he drive it with out Lic.? Was he the first owner ? Will it pass a safety inspection ? Does he have receipt in his name from the Kit Manufacture ? It must be in his name not handed over by someone else , and it can not be a photo copy . Ask me how I know!!!!!!!!!!!

Illinois' registration for kit cars like the Cobra has recently been completely shot down. I wouldn't even consider registering the car in IL right now. It's a complete mess.

Suggest you (and the seller) go to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation website, their DMV has a category called "hobbyist" and I think you will find replica car registration guidelines to follow. The State of Wisconsin's DOT appears to be more "understanding" towards replicas, making registration a little more straight forward than some other states. They basically tossed replicas, street rods, antiques, and collectibles into the same pot. Just make the seller has all his documentation "air tight", oh, and don't forget your checkbook! |
Classic Roadsters II, Don Scott, MAY be out of business or unable to do anything with MSO's at this time. If you need a receipt for various parts (engine, trans, etc.) to go along with the MSO it could be an additional nightmare.
Perhaps thats why the car is for sale? Registration issues... |
The ownly way to protect yourself is to have the owner get a title in Wis. A MSO can not be transferred in anyway or reassigned by the present owner. A MSO is assigned by the maker to the first buyer only . And only he can get the title . DO NOT show up at Il DMV with a blank MSO , you are only asking for trouble. A open MSO is ILLEGAL
