This is the famous Empress Augusta Bay on Bougainville. Cape Torokina is right below the (very active!) volcano. You are right on the battle-site where the US Fleet under RAdms. Stanton Merril and Walden Ainsworth surprised the fleet of RAdm. Sentaro Omori on the night of 2 November, 1943. This was almost a YEAR after the conclusive Second Battle of Guadalcanal (12-14November, 1942) which shifted the action up to the northern Solomons. Few people realize that fully half (and maybe more) of the Pacific war's extent was fought in the Solomon Islands! 1942-1944!!!
