You really don't need a fancy isolating switch. In fact, the simpler the better. An old fashioned big copper knife switch handles hundreds of amps and is really easy to visually check. And it...

That light would be perfect. And the way you strip a wire in mid-span is with a razor blade. You just lightly shave the plastic insulation off just like you were whittling a stick with a pocket...
