ERA 427SC #707
2005 Works Built – Magnificently Original!

If you’re looking for “an original,” this is the one you want. This ERA was built, finished and maintained “original” and it’s a prize for those of us who appreciate that special era look, without modernization.
ERA 707 is an ERA-finished Cobra, built for a buyer in Massachusetts who called Bob and said, “Build me the best car you can.” They did. Two years later, it was sold to me in California and I got it through the SB100 process in January 2009. I've loved every day of owning it, but for many reasons, it’s time for it to have a new (and lucky) owner.
This ERA has all options including Trigo knockoffs with Halibrand spinners; ERA’s improved rear suspension with outboard brakes; upgraded front brakes; wool carpet; leather seats with 4-point harnesses; coated exhaust and sidepipes (with safety shields); Richmond 5-speed transmission (1:1 5th), a full set of Smiths gauges with reverse speedo; visors and wind wings; Le Mans gas cap (with inner safety cap), Lucas tri-bar headlights and – as a finishing touch – the correct t-handle pull on the glove box. (Damn, those are expensive!)
Under the hood it has a Danbury Competition Engines iron-block FE, a 428 displacing 446 cubic inches, aluminum Edelbrock Performance RPM top, MFI ignition, a Speed Demon carburetor and a full-breathing Cobra oval air intake. (All the good, strong parts inside, too - complete list available.) The original build was with a Holley carb and turkey pan, which are included. Builder dyno was over 450HP and I believe the carb change and other tweaks put it closer to 500 in tune for 93-octane. 7-quart baffled oil pan.
The battery is an era-correct Autolite replica. To increase the original look, I replaced a number of later-era parts with more correct options (black and silver Aeroquip instead of red and blue, etc.) and have over time replaced many fasteners and fittings with stainless steel. I also added a high-flow oil cooler thermostat to aid in getting the engine up to temp in cooler climates. The huge aluminum 4-row radiator never overheated even on hot California days.
Finished in glowing Lamborghini Titanium. Front splitter, finished in body color, included. It’s a well-kept driver, so there are a few tiny dings here and there, and some scrapes under the chin… but I have a pint of professional matched paint ready for touch-up work. Never driven on dirt, gravel or in the wet, so it’s as spotless as a driver can be. Near-new Wolf cover included.
So, how “original” is 707? Pretty damn original. From the tri-bars to the 15-inch wheels to the t-handle glove box to the Autolite battery to the old-school engine dress and more, it’s so “original” it took Best of Class at the 2010 Serrano Concours – against a field of five including two continuation Shelbys. (www.dgath.com/misc/cobra.html) What’s more, it’s so “original” it fooled its builder. When I got to Connecticut and had to register it in Wethersfield, I stopped at ERA to say hi. I was talking to Peter or Bob when the other one came walking up outside, doing the slow “oh, wow” walk around it… until he saw something that pegged it as one of theirs. He came in grinning and said, “I thought an original had stopped by to see us.”
I have put about 5000 miles on this car in seven years, all gentle highway and byway driving, which means little wear and tear on the car even at about 8,500 miles. It’s all ready for your adventures, be they buffed up for show, packed up for weekends or tuned up for something more aggressive. Absolutely fabulous ERA ride, incredibly compliant over bad New England roads. Many riders used to sports cars or other builds have complimented the “drive all day” smoothness, which loses nothing in hard corners.
Includes three binders of build, upgrade and maintenance documentation, front splitter, Holley carb and turkey pan, Wolf cover, floor mats, chrome Halon fire extinguisher - and I will throw in things like the lead hammer, wire spinner and safety wire canister if you ask nicely.
California SB100 Note: I got this beast through the SB100 process in early 2009 and that added value was part of the reason I originally considered selling it in CA. When I registered it in Connecticut, no new title was issued. It has not been re-registered in Colorado. I have the California title in hand. So technically, it’s still under CA title, with the exempt designation, and the chassis sticker is still neatly in place under the hood. It is possible – possible, mind you – that it could be registered in California without further registration hassles. But that’s entirely up to the buyer to research and attempt; no guarantees.
