As mentioned, make sure everything else is correct before you start playing with jetting. You could be experiencing a timing issue, as mentioned or too much preload on the lifters. If you retained the stock rocker studs and they are positive stop, you couldn't set preload, unless it happened to be correct you would be on one side or the other. When machine work is done( head/block decking) that changes the dimensions between the cam and heads and needs some adjustment. If it is too tight it can create popping through the carb at various rpms...kind of similar to a burned valve.
