I don't know about that statement. I don't think I have ever driven my car without somebody asking me if it is a "real" one or not. I was just watching some program on TV the other day. A guy had a Shelby unassembled (or torn apart) in his garage. I didn't see the whole program, but he was trying to sell it for $10k. The buyers brought some guy in to tell them what brand it was, and here it was a real Shelby. The asking price went WAY up after that. Had the buyers not done that, they would have gotten the car for $10k. A deal to say the least.
