They used to allow cars to run with some kind of blanket that could be wrapped around the bell housing and would catch and stop any clutch explosion. I don't think those are legal now but am not sure. I think a scatter shield is good for any high performance car as even the racing clutches can fail once in a while and it only take once to lose a leg or worse. That guy was lucky as were the other people around there.
