Good point Tru, daybreak to sunset as I recall. No way we could harvest the hay for the cows without the neighbors help, for instance. It was common practice to pool resources and man power in those days.
I helped dig the "root cellar", by hand, pick, shovel, wheel barrow, after school. Oh man I hated coming home during that time! It's still there, stays remarkably cool even in the summer.
We would set out salt licks for the cows AND the deer so we wouldn't have to go to far to get meat. They came to us.
