I agree, Hwy 1 south from Big Surs is pretty scary. Years ago we planned a bicyle ride down Hwy 1 and onto LA. First, my wife and I drove it in the car....very scary, narrow, no center line, high cliffs and no guard rails in places, Motor homes and trucks consumed the entire road on sharp turns, so I was very concerned about riding my mountian bike on this road.
Turned out great, little traffic during the week and going slow proved to make the experience wonderful and not scary.
