Hate to say it Baz but if you are aware these RTA fellas read the forums, then you probably aren't doing yourself any favours here.
At the end of the day - what they say goes for now. I myself am very worried about getting my car done - should have puled my finger out a while ago, but unfortunately other issues have gotten in the way. When it come to the time I will do what I have to without complaint. (Yes Sir, No sir, three bags full as Gav said) Why? Because whinging, complaining, bagging on a public forum will just make them get their back up even more. If I was sitting in my office going through a report on a Friday afternoon, and the "client" called and were bugging me about it (after I had said I would call them), I would probably call it quits for the day, have a 90 minute smoko, and put it back to the bottom of the pile.
Also, putting the engineers head on the "chopping block" could just drive another engineer out of this business - as they are dropping like flies by the looks of things, probably not what we need right now.
Baz I do feel your pain, and I feel really sorry for you in that your dream is being delayed even further. But it will happen, and when it does, this will all be a distant bad memory (and make your car worth even more).
Cheers
Also, To whom it may concern, I do love the RTA - (mine is the fake aluminium fake one that is coming up for engineering soon hopefully), and I recognise you guys are just doing your job, are not out to get me, are not jealous or *****y, and only want cars that pass the relevant standard on the road.
