Most all of the FE engines in my past street driven cars ran best all around at 38-40, of course I haven't had one since 1970 and we could get GASOLENE back then.

I always went by (and still do) finding out what the engine likes as total, find out initial that it will start at, and limit the advance to those two numbers---which means limiting the dist advance number to the differance. I want the advance to come in as soon as possible and yet retard back to base at idle to prevent dieseling and run on at shut down. generally on MSD stuff I end up with one light silver and one light blue spring with the biggest OD donut in the distributor---( Yea Patrick)

However----I also do fuel curve to match----
